365GRATEFUL.Geton board with 365Grateful, a photographic project that's all about the good things in life. Does it sound similar to keeping a gratitude journal? Well, the idea here is to create a visual journal by taking a photo every day of one thing for which you are grateful. So get our your smartphone, dig- ital camera or even your DSLR, and get snapping! RECIPES THAT CROCK is a website created by the slow cooker-obsessed blog- ger Cris Goode. There are a ton of fun tummy-warm- ing recipes to fire up your slow cooker this winter and beyond. Simply search for recipes on the site or sign up for the newsletter, which arrives a few times per week. CHECKY. Technology can be a good thing, but when you're spending too much of your valuable time checking your smartphone every five minutes, it's just downright distracting. Use the Checky app to get in- sight on how often you're checking your phone. By discovering how extreme your actual checking habit is you'll become more mindful when it comes to your smartphone. The app is available for iOS and An- droid. HOTPADS Are you in the market to rent an apartment or purchase a home? The HotPads app and website can help you find your new abode. Punch in your intended city or town. Select the number of bedrooms you'll need. And set up a pricing parameter. Available rent- als or homes on the market will pop up. Simply hover over and click the icon on the map for details, or se- lect "list" if you prefer a listed format. You can save your searches and ask for search alerts as new prop- erties become available. This is a great place to find renters for your own prop- erty as well. HotPads is available as for iOS and Android. TRUECAR. Whether you're in the market for a new or pre-owned car or are looking to sell your current vehicle, check out TrueCar, a website and app that lets you know the going rate for spe- cific makes and models of cars in your area. If you're looking for a new car, you can find all the specs right there instead of searching through multiple manufacturer websites. If you're looking for a pre-owned model, listings with the "great price" label show a handy grid that lets you know where that particular ve- hicle falls compared to the national average sell- ing price. It's probably best to use this as an in- formation site — at least at first — since signing up may result in excessive emails. The app is avail- able for iOS and Android. CHECKOUT 51. While doing your grocery shop- ping, earn some extra cash with Checkout51, a grocery shopping website with apps for iOS and Android. Look over the new of- fers available every Thurs- day morning, and select the ones you plan on buy- ing that week at any store. Once you've made your purchases, upload your re- ceipt. EVERYDAYCHEAPSKATE 6 free websites help save time and money The long anticipated 20th Anniversary Edition of "That Ribbon of Highway I, Highway 99 from the Ore- gon Border to Sacramento" has recently been released, according to Northern Cal- ifornia publisher Living Gold Press. Most Red Bluff resi- dents are familiar with ar- tifacts of this historic road; the 1920 concrete bridge over Brewery Creek, the old bridge pillars in the streambed of Dibble Creek on the north side of town, the concrete pavement on Hess Road and in front of North Main Equipment. All are remnants of the Mex- ico-to-Canada highway that was given the number "99" in the mid-1920s and originally called the Pacific Highway. The Red Bluff area is known among old high- way buffs for its plethora of concrete highway rem- nants, some in plain sight, such as on Hess Road, and many more well hidden. Red Bluff is also notable for being at the junction of 99E and 99W, the two competi- tive alternate routes to and from the state capital. Ribbon of Highway I, like the other two books in the series, is a richly illustrated regional history and guide- book. They have been called "the seminal guidebooks" to former US99, the ma- jor west coast north-south highway artery. In many places finding the oldest highway route takes some sleuthing. Au- thor Jill Livingston and her photographer sister Kath- ryn have done much of the detective work, as shown by the detailed maps and road logs included in the books. The treasures they find in their travels might be as plain as a 100-year-old concrete box culvert or as splendid as a vintage mid- century neon motel sign. Partofacadreoftwo-lane highway fans, they consult tattered maps and Google Earth, compare notes and head out in search of traces the old route. Fans share their finds via e-mail and on Facebook pages such as "CA State Highway 99-Tehama County," created by an es- pecially dedicated Red Bluff resident, and "Historic US Highway 99." To the growing ranks of amateur highway his- torians, Old 99, The Main Street of California, is viewed as a pleasingly tar- nished treasure. The books can be ordered from amazon.com, your lo- cal bookstore or www.Liv- ingGoldPress.com. HISTORY Book examines Highway 99 artifacts CONTRIBUTED A section of Floyd Lane in Cottonwood. Steven T.
