RICK SILVA — PARADISE POST. By Jeff Larson jlarson@paradisepost.com @jtlarson on Twitter OROVILLE Every time the Red Bluff High boys basketball team would make a run or answer a Lassen field goal, the Grizzlies would have an immediate re- sponse. Usually it came off the hand of Wyatt Del Carlo or Wyatt Martin as the two combined for 40 points to lead Lassen to the 65-56 win over Red Bluff in the 24th Dennis Burnum Tournament final hosted by Oroville Saturday night. "We didn't have enough good stretches," Red Bluff coach Pablo Vazquez said. "There were times where we played really well and then there were times when we got complacent, stagnant and weren't moving as a team. They're very well-coached, very tough (and) aggressive." Red Bluff (7-6) was led Brayden Hutchins' 17 points and all-tour- ney pick Derek Gordon, who scored 16 on four 3-pointers. Vazquez' team hit nine 3s and trimmed it to 41-33 heading to the fourth quarter, but wouldn't get any closer, thanks to Martin's quick hits from the perimeter and Del Carlo's tournament MVP performance on the block. Mar- tin, who finished with 23 points, swished five consecutive points late in the fourth — one 3, one 2-point field goal — to get it back to double-digits at 51-41 with un- der just under four minutes left. "(Del Carlo) is very patient on the block, he's got good footwork, then of course (Martin) answered everything we did on the offensive end," Vazquez said. "Corning and Anderson, we know each other well, we've been in the NAL together for 14 years...we know each other inside and out," said Cardinals coach Kurt Wilkins. "We know how to make each other play ugly. They responded to whatever coach (Mark) Brown gave them at half- time and came out and made us do just that." The Cardinals jumped out to a 9-0 lead after Noah Zoppi and Austin Mishoe hit three-point- ers and Zoppi tacked on a layup and a free throw. Zoppi would hit two more threes in the first pe- riod, Brenden Hoag hit one and Corey Busta added a pair of buck- ets to give Corning a 22-12 lead after one. The Cubs stepped up in the sec- ond period and beat the Cards on the boards to chip away at the lead, but some hot shooting from BASKETBALL CARDS TAKE SHOOTOUT TITLE TO STAY PERFECT CHIP THOMPSON - DAILY NEWS Corning's Austin Mishoe goes to the rim Saturday night against Anderson. PHOTO BY LARRY LONG BASKETBALL PAGE 2 By Josh Dubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA The meticulous re- building job in Oakland crashed as soon as quarterback Derek Carr broke his right leg in the penultimate game of the regular season. Instead of thoughts of a Super Bowl, the Raiders lost a chance at the division and then their first playoff game in 14 years with a 27-14 loss to Houston on Saturday. With most of the key pieces in place, now the Raiders hope hav- ing a healthy Carr will next sea- son help them take another step toward a championship. "Nobody wants to take one swing and hope that you have a magical year one time," coach Jack Del Rio said. "I think you want to build your roster strong, build your team strong and build the culture strong so that what you're able to put in and put to- gether is a roster that can go out and compete at a championship level year after year. That's what the goal is." The Raiders (12-5) seem in po- sition to do that with a nucleus led by Carr, All-Pro edge rusher Khalil Mack, Pro Bowl receiver Amari Cooper and a stout offen- sive line headed by Pro Bowlers Rodney Hudson, Donald Penn and All-Pro left guard Kelechi Osemele. Those players helped a team that lost its first 10 games in 2014 when Carr and Mack were rook- ies become one of the top teams in the league before Carr's injury derailed the season. "I'm going to sit back and I'm just going to reflect on it. I'm go- ing to know that, 'Hey, it's not easy to win 12 games in this league,"' Carr said. "Who knows if we'll do it again. Hopefully we do. That's the plan. We want to win all of them, but that is not an easy thing. The fact that we were able to do that is ex- citing, but like I said, there's so much to get better at and work on that that thing in our stomach that makes us sick and makes us angry is going to propel us mov- ing forward so we can compete and be better versions of our- selves." MOVING TIME One of the biggest questions facing the Raiders is their future home. Owner Mark Davis plans to apply for relocation this offseason in hopes of moving the team to Las Vegas, where a new stadium could open in 2020 with help from $750 million in government funding.
