Dr. John Cook, CEO of Indigenous Ministries, will be speaking at Community Baptist Church on Sunday, Jan. 15 on The Challenge of the Middle East. Cook's ministry has him working closely with the persecuted church in Middle Eastern countries. In recent years, Indige- nous Ministries has de- livered container loads of food and supplies to Chris- tian families who were dis- placed by the ISIS forces in Syria and Iraq. Worship Services start at 9:15 a.m. at 598 Round Up Ave., just off Mulberry Ave. in Red Bluff. In addition, during the following two weeks, more than 30 people will be coming to Red Bluff for the Library Project. Thou- sands of books have been collected nationwide and will be brought to Com- munity Baptist Church for sorting and catalog- ing. They will then be put in a container and shipped to the new library at Grace Bible College in Central In- dia. COMMUNITYBAPTIST By Josh Cornfield TheAssociatedPress TRENTON, N.J. A trans- gender man sued a Ro- man Catholic hospital on Thursday, saying it cited religion in refusing to al- low his surgeon to perform a hysterectomy as part of his sex transition. Jionni Conforti's sex and gender discrimination lawsuit comes as new reg- ulations hailed as ground- breaking anti-discrimina- tion protections for trans- gender people are under legal attack from religious groups. Conforti had scheduled the surgery at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson in 2015. He says a hospital adminis- trator told him the proce- dure to remove his uterus couldn't be done because it was a "Catholic hospital." "I felt completely dis- respected," said Conforti, whose transition began in 2004. "That's not how any hospital should treat any person regardless of who they are." The hospital said Thurs- day it follows ethical and religious directives from the U.S. Conference of Bishops in making deci- sions about care and treat- ment. The directives say procedures judged "mor- ally wrong" by the church don't have to be performed. The lawsuit comes less than a week after a federal judge in Texas ordered a halt to new U.S. Health and Human Services reg- ulations that had been set to go into effect Jan. 1 to bar certain forms of trans- gender discrimination by doctors, hospitals and in- surers. Civil rights groups had hailed the new health rules as groundbreaking, but five states, a Chris- tian medical association and an Indiana-based network of religious hos- pitals sued. Judge Reed O'Connor ruled Saturday that religious hospitals would be forced to violate their beliefs or risk severe consequences if they didn't change their policies. Another legal challenge to regulations that Cath- olic hospitals say would force them to perform gender transitioning pro- cedures and abortions was filed in federal court last week in North Dakota by a group of Catholic busi- nesses and organizations, including the Catholic Benefits Association and the Diocese of Fargo. Opponents say the regu- lations create a moral prob- lem for Catholic employers and religious groups. They say Pope Francis has reit- erated Catholic teachings oppose theories that a per- son's sex is alterable. "While initiating a law- suit is not something we take lightly, this new man- date represents a grave threat to religious free- dom," said Bishop John Folda, of the Fargo dio- cese. Conforti, who is repre- sented by the nonprofit Lambda Legal, said a nurse in charge of surgery confirmed the procedure could be scheduled but his doctor was told later it wouldn't be allowed be- cause it was for gender re- assignment. An email cited in the lawsuit from the hospi- tal's director of mission services, Father Martin Rooney, said it couldn't allow the surgery because it's a Catholic hospital. But the hospital's pa- tient bill of rights guaran- tees medical services with- out discrimination based on "gender identity or ex- pression," the lawsuit said. Conforti, of Totowa, said he felt betrayed and became depressed after the hospital's decision. Al- though he had the pro- cedure performed three months later at a differ- ent hospital, he said he's suing so no one else has to go through what he did. Conforti, 33, is seeking monetary damages and a requirement the hospital perform any needed med- ical care for transgender patients. He cites the prob- lem of suicide in the trans- gender community. "Anything can trigger that. Something may seem small, but to a trans per- son it's not," he said. "I don't want other trans peo- ple to have to go through and feel what I felt." Conforti had scheduled the surgery in 2015, but he alleges in the federal lawsuit that a hospital administrator then told him the procedure to remove the uterus he was born with couldn't be done because it was a "Catholic hospital."
