MARCH 10-16, 2010 UCW 11 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM A combination of betrayal, sacrifice, death, love and classic rock are the makings of a great drama, and coming to town on March 19 is one of the most notable. This work has been nominated for five Tony's, and is the result of the brilliant and well known collaboration of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The show started out on Broadway, and was followed up by a hit movie. It is a testimony to classic '70s rock, and a must see event. The event is Jesus Christ Super Star, and it will be at the Crown Center Theater at 8 p.m. With Easter right around the corner, the timing for this presentation couldn't be better. It is an accurate portrayal of the last days of Jesus, and it's appropriate for everyone who wants to come. "It's absolute verbatim, they didn't take any creative license to what happened to Jesus at the time. It was just a very cool and hip presentation that was appropriate for the time." says Frank Zaccaro, marketing manager at the Crown . "This was a way to mix religion and political views of the time with the spirit of rock," he said, adding that those who have never seen the movie, or are too young to remember the '70s should come to see the show. "It's a good window on the times, to be able to mix what was at the time religion and politics," he noted Ted Neely, who played Jesus in the movie and on stage for the past 40 years, will reprise the role. He has performed in musicals such as Hair and some productions of Samuel Beckett, but it was for his portrayal of Jesus that he was nominated for a Golden Globe. Music of the '70s is different from what we have now, and was often fi lled with messages and emotions Zacorro points out. So it makes the perfect vehicle for such a story as the crucifi xion of Jesus Christ. Zacorro says the play is "the life of Jesus in his fi nal days through the voice of rock." Though this play is not new, it is timeless and as gripping as it was decades ago. The story of Christ has captivated generations, and so has rock — the combination of the two is a match made in heaven.
