'LVWULFW&RXUW-XGJH7DOPDJH%DJJHWWSHUIRUPHGWKHRDWKRI RIÀFH Gilfus was appointed to the vacant at-large seat formerly held by Breeden Blackwell, who resigned in January to become the Director of Government Relations for Cape Fear Valley Health System. A Cumberland County native and Terry Sanford High School graduate, Gilfus earned a communications degree at East Carolina University. He worked as a staff member in the state Senate and joined the U.S. Army after the 9/11 attacks. He was commissioned WKURXJK2IÀFHU&DQGLGDWH6FKRRODQGVHUYHGDVDQRIÀFHULQWKH Ordnance Corps. Gilfus served in Mosul, Iraq, with the 1/25 Stryker Brigade Combat Team in 2005. After returning from the deployment, he was promoted to captain and soon left the military to attend law school. Gilfus earned his law degree from Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.
