On the air turnforasecondseasonas the 49ers coach, something his predecessor, Jim Tom- sula, did not do. Only one franchise has fired back-to-back coaches after one-season terms in the NFL's modern era since 1970. That franchise is the 49ers. It happened in the late 1970s when they moved on from Monte Clark (1976) and Ken Meyer (1977). The coaching changes didn't stop there as Pete McCulley and then Fred O'Connor gave it a go in 1978 before Bill Walsh's heroic arrival in 1979, albeit a 2-14 start for Walsh. Each of the past two Jan- uarys has brought a 49ers coaching search, as they moved on from Jim Har- baugh to Tomsula to Kelly, who signed a four-year, $25 million pact. The Philadel- phia Eagles fired Kelly last Dec. 29, prior to the final game of his third season. Harbaugh's dismissal was announced imme- diately after the 2014 fi- nale, and Tomsula's came two hours after last sea- son's finale, both of which were home wins to com- plete 8-8 and 5-11 seasons, respectively. Tomsula had three years remaining on a $14 million contract, to which Jed York said last January: "We've got sev- eral years of Jimmy T's salary left and we're go- ing to eat it." Harbaugh was hired in January 2011, after the 49ers fired Mike Singletary before their 2010 finale and had Tomsula serve as in- terim coach. Hard to fathom that no other franchise went through one-and-done coaches in back-to-back seasons? It's true. Not even Al Davis' Raiders roulette or the ever-maligned Cleve- land Browns flipped con- secutive coaches in one- and-done fashion. The Minnesota Vikings did in the mid-1980s, when Bud Grant retired for a second time (but was not fired) af- ter he spent the 1985 sea- son replacing his own suc- cessor from his first term, Les Steckel. • Running back Carlos Hyde won't require surgery for a sprained medial col- lateral ligament in his left knee, said Kelly, noting the injury will keep him out of Sunday's finale and leave him 12 yards shy of his first 1,000-yard rushing season. "The fact that it's a non-surgical thing is the thing that's positive," Kelly said. "It's unfortu- nate we won't have him for Seattle, but it's good news for Carlos." Mike Davis, inactive the past six games, is expected to serve as the No. 3 run- ning back behind Shaun Draughn and DuJuan Har- ris. • The 49ers have allowed more points (455) than in any previous season, in- cluding 453 points in 1999 and 452 in 2004. The league record is 533 points (Baltimore Colts, 1981). The 49ers have given up 24 rushing touchdowns, matching a franchise re- cord from 1955 (12 games) and 1979. Their 29 receiv- ing touchdowns allowed are tied for the second- most in a season (1980), and well back of the fran- chise mark of 36 touch- downs (1999). 49ers FROM PAGE 1 for their fate. "It's a tough game, and things happen in this game. It's all about the team, it's all about us mov- ing on with the next oppor- tunity and pulling together as a group of men and sac- rificing and pulling for each other, and all those things," Del Rio said. "That doesn't change. It doesn't change regardless of who it is. It's about the team. It's about us winning, and it's not in any way meant to be insensitive." McGloin has thrown 55 passes since making six starts late in the 2013 sea- son. He won his debut start at Houston before losing the final five and return- ing to the role of backup after Carr was drafted the following year But McGloin did have to deliver a few key throws to seal the victory over the Colts. He converted a third-down pass to Andre Holmes on his first drive to help burn about two min- utes off the clock before the Raiders punted. Then, with Oakland pro- tecting an eight-point lead just before the two-min- ute warning, McGloin con- verted another third-down pass when he hit Amari Cooper for a 19-yard gain on third-and-8. The Raid- ers then took three knees to run out the clock. "Really competitive guy. Really attacks his prep- aration. A little bit fear- less. I think he's got a little bit of a chip on his shoul- der, I'd say," Del Rio said. "We expect our guys when they step in and play to play well, and we expect to win with them. I mean, he made a couple of nice throws at the end there." Notes Del Rio had no update on WR Michael Crabtree, who has been dealing with an injured finger and left in the third quarter. ... DL Mario Edwards Jr. played 18 snaps in his first game of the season after a hip injury in the preseason. "He had a big smile on his face. He was just happy to be back in the action and get a chance to play again," Del Rio said. Raiders FROM PAGE 1 37 touchdowns. "You get a little younger and with the challenges comes opportu- nities for kids," Claeys said. "They've done a great job of preparing and obvi- ously the staff just keeps preaching that we're going to work to their strengths and if you're going to go down at least you're play- ing to kids' strength. The worst thing we could do is ask a bunch of kids to do something they're not ca- pable of. We have enough kids. They've worked hard and prepared hard and I'm excited to see them play." LEACH'S TAKE During the short-lived Minnesota boycott, Washington State coach Mike Leach said that if any of his players ever boycotted for what- ever reason, he would cut them. Asked Monday to elaborate, he said: "I would. I'm not going to elaborate on it because in this setting it's just all about me trying to contra- dict something that Min- nesota did and that's up to Minnesota how they han- dled that situation, and ul- timately if I have a boycott I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. That's essen- tially how I would han- dle it so you can elaborate from there." FALK TALK Leach said Falk will be back for his senior season rather than entering the NFL draft. Asked if this would be Falk's last game, and what he has meant to the pro- gram, Leach said: "Won't be his last game. We will see what the last game does mean to the pro- gram and all the milestone stuff." FALK TALK PART II Min- nesota is impressed with Falk. "Not many peo- ple complete over 70 per- cent of the footballs they throw," Claeys said. "He's extremely accurate, knows where he's going with the ball. They do a great job of attacking the different space and the different zones. It will take a great effort, and part of that when it comes to it, is that hopefully they're having a little bit of an off day and whether that's through drops, or whatever. But it's hard to rely on him to be inaccurate because he's done such a good job all year long." ZOO NEWS During a visit to the San Diego Zoo, WSU wide receiver Gabe Marks and guard Cody O'Connell were asked what animal resembles Leach the most. O'Connell went with a lion because it's the king of the jungle, and Marks went with a koala. "I think we're going to play Cody O'Connell more this game than we are Gabe Marks," Leach said. "I haven't given it a great deal of thought. I'll go ahead and defer to the brains of those two guys. From a personal standpoint let's stick with O'Connell." Bowl FROM PAGE 1 KEVIN C. COX – GETTY IMAGES Chip Kelly said he has yet to talk to 49ers ownership about their plans for next season.
