No? Yes? Well, I do and I'm both an entrepreneur and an owner of a small business. I work with small businesses every day and witness daily the frustration that comes from trying to balance the operation of a profi table business with complying to hundreds of burdensome and costly state and federal regulations. When will it stop? Will it ever? When was the last time any politician (city, right up there with the locations of the Cumberland County Coliseum, JP Riddle Stadium and the county jail; the Prince Charles Hotel fi asco, the E-85 Ethanol Plant scandal, the Docks money grab, the demise of the Museum of Art and the dubious location of the Festival Park Building. America's traditional Jackie Pfendler of J.P. Electric struggles to keep her American dream. county, state or national) campaigned on a platform of getting rid of stifl ing, needless laws and regulations that would make it easier to do business? Never! And, now, most recent local and national developments have small businesses breathless and bracing themselves for the next round of governmental assaults. Here are a few examples: Currently, a profi table 50-year-old family-owned business in New Jersey employing 75 people in their manufacturing plant fi nds themselves "lawyered-up" in order to keep their local government from commandeering their plant and turning it over to a private developer for a shopping mall in the name of economic development. From the Market House to the White House the rules, restrictions policies, taxes and thousands of pages of laws regulating small businesses is stifl ing. Closer to home, entrepreneur and private business owner Jackie Pfendler of J.P. Electric struggles to keep the City of Fayetteville from snatching up her American dream in hopes of relocating the blighted Person Street bus station to create a new shiny government-funded blighted area on Winslow and Russell streets. Unfortunately, this situation will inevitably play itself out in the courts. Win or lose the encounter will leave every American with an entrepreneurial spirit skeptical of government intentions and forever unsure of the defi nitions of freedom and the American dream. In addition, the proposed multi-modal transportation complex has an excellent chance of being the next chapter in Fayetteville/ Cumberland County's book of most notorious mistakes. Electric Company. free-enterprise system, vision, hard work, risk, sweat equity and unselfi sh personal investment have built hundreds of local businesses like Townsend Realty, Ed's Tire, Circa 1800, The above list is by no means comprehensive, but all of the businesses listed are stellar examples of the American Way. These are the kind of people and businesses that have built America and paved the way to prosperity. The government has no claim on their success. To paraphrase what a very astute Congressman said appropriately "... take the heavy boot of government off the throat of American businesses." Government may be able to force you to give up your business and acquire your land through eminent domain. However, they cannot use eminent domain to acquire pride, prosperity and profi ts — all of which drive a prosperous and healthy economy. Again, good luck, J.P. Electric. Fight the good fi ght. You are fi ghting for all of us. Thanks for reading P.S. Good news! There is no truth to the rumor that Circa 1800 is closing. Circa's recent closure was to accommodate vacations, renovations and equipment upgrades and staff training. Come on down! Thank you, for reading Up & Coming Weekly.
