ANDERSON — Corn- The 35th annual Lions' All-Star Football Game was one of the most-lop- sided contests in the event's history that features the north state's best graduat- ing seniors. Orland quarterback Austin Schmeltzer took home the Ray Francis MVP award as he played a part in two touchdowns and ran the Orland offense to precision for the North. The Orland Trojans, who won the Northern Sec- tion Division II champi- onship and the school's first since 1991, not only saw Schmeltzer enjoy a big night but so did every Tro- jan. Schmeltzer, who threw for 77 yards and ran for 81 more, was joined by mas- sive offensive tackle Scott Batchelder, who paved the way for much of the night, and Andrew Hutchens and Javone Bradford as well. If they weren't enough, the North was coached by Orland's Mike McDonald and his assistants. McDonald, the section football coach of the year this past season as he became the third coach to win a section title with two different schools, was impressed by how domi- nant his North team was Saturday. "They were just a bunch of bees tonight," McDon- ald said. "They didn't stop." nervous about tonight's game because the South's offense "could score in 12 seconds." McDonald said he was answer. With the all-star game rule that allowed rushers to blitz only if they put their hand on the ground, the North had Enterprise's Alex Henderson walk up to the line from his middle linebacker position and do just that. But the North had an Henderson led a seven- sack performance for the North in the first half alone as the defense terrorized Pleasant Valley quarter- back Eric Ascencio. That never let the South get much going offensively. The North had no such trouble, taking a 21-0, first- quarter lead and never looked back. "I wouldn't allow him to come off the field except for offense. I love that kid. What a player." — North head coach Mike McDonald on Corning's Ryan Holland Sanchez to open the game led to the North getting the ball after a vicious hit jarred the ball loose. "That play showed we're here for business," Batchelder said. Two plays later, Lassen's Cameron Medico ran 32 yards for a touch- down and the South led 7-0 54 seconds into the game. Shasta's Chris Collins ran 51 yards for another score with 7:20 left in the period, and Henderson ran 5 yards for the North's third TD of the quarter with 2:17 left. that worked so well for Chico last season, but the North's athletic secondary that included Corning's Holland and Orland's Brad- ford was up to the task. Stevens' score in the early second quarter cut the North lead to 21-6, but it wouldn't get any closer. Enterprise's Henderson got his second TD, this time from 1 yard out with 10:13 left in the first half for a North 28-6 advantage. Schmeltzer then called The South got on the scoreboard on a 5-yard TD run from Paradise's Albert Stevens 38 seconds into the second quarter. The reign- ing Northern Section Offensive MVP ran for 84 yards on 17 carries in the first half. He finished with 109 yards on 24 rushes, which were both game-high totals. punched in the 2-point conversion with another hard run. "Those were grind-it- out yards," South coach Jason Alvistur said of Stevens' game. "He has an amazing motor. He never stops." The South ran Alvistur's no-huddle, spread offense his own number this time, capping the scoring in the first half and officially ush- ering in the blowout with a 71-yard TD run. That gave the North a 35-6 lead with 7:15 left in the half. In the first half, Ascen- cio completed 11-of-20 passes for 70 yards with one interception. Chico's Kyle Twissel- man caught four of those passes for 40 yards. Fellow Panther Aaron Chu had two catches for 28 yards. Late in the third quarter, Durham's Chris Craven took a short pass from Ascencio and broke a tack- le and went 44 yards for a touchdown. But the North still led 49-14 after Stevens The North had stretched the lead as Corning's Hol- land hauled in a 44-yard pass from Schmeltzer with 4:01 left in the period. And that was after a 1- yard TD run from Medico earlier in the period for his second TD of the game. Holland returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown with 11:10 left in the game, giving him two scores as well. "I wouldn't allow him to come off the field except for offense," McDonald said of Corning's Holland. "I love that kid. What a player." finished with 156 yards on 19 of 37 passing with one touchdown and two inter- ceptions. Craven caught seven passes for 60 yards. Twisselman fin- ished with six catches for 38 yards. Chu had three catches for 34 yards. The North was led by Schmeltzer's 81 yards on 10 carries. He also com- Maxwell's Brent Cabral had a 4-yard TD run for the South and the game's final score. For the South, Ascencio pleted 6 of 10 passes for 77 yards. Collins had 67 yards rushing on seven carries and also caught three passes for 43 yards. Hutchens of Orland totaled 34 yards rushing on five carries, providing more Trojan highlights. Sanchez, the Hamilton kicker who made the all- state team, was a perfect 8 of 8 on extra points and routinely booted the ball on kickoffs and punts for touchbacks. The North has won four straight games and leads the series 20-14-1. Last year, the North won 28-14 as Lassen's Trevor Baum was the MVP. Next year's game is scheduled to be played at Oroville's Harrison Sta- dium. The inaugural 8-man game on Saturday saw the South come back from a 20-8 deficit at halftime to defeat the North 30-28. — Eight-man Lions All- Star game Andre Byik and Joseph Shufelberger con- tributed to this article. Gold medals flow despite Phelps' woes OLYMPICS LONDON (AP) — Missy Franklin stared out on the horde of reporters, suddenly sounding very much like a high school senior-to-be. ''I don't like being up here alone,'' she said nervously. Then, just like that, she turned on a big smile and worked the room like a pro. Thanks to this Colorado teenager, America's swim hopes are back on track at the Olympics. Michael Phelps has yet to win a gold medal, and Ryan Lochte's star has dimmed just a bit. So it was Franklin providing a much- needed boost to swim- ming's powerhouse nation, coming back less than 14 minutes after swimming a semifinal heat to win the first gold medal of what fig- ures to be a dazzling career. MCT photo U.S. swimmer Missy Franklin, top, earned gold in the 100-meter backstroke. ''Indescribable,'' the 17- year-old Franklin said after rallying to win the 100- meter backstroke Monday. ''I still can't believe that happened. I don't even know what to think. I saw my parents' reaction on the screen and I just started bawling. I can't even think right now.'' After finishing up the semis of the 200 freestyle, she hopped out of the pool and headed to the diving well for a quick warm- down. She didn't even have time to make it to the prac- tice pool, not when her big- ger event was coming right up. Even Phelps was amazed at Franklin's stami- na, saying he had never done back-to-back races that close together at such a major meet. His quickest turnaround was about a half-hour. ''She's a racer and she knows what to do,'' Phelps said. Matt Grevers kept the gold medals coming for the U.S. in rat-a-tat fashion, fol- lowing up Franklin's win with one of his own in the men's 100 back. For good measure, Nick Thoman made it a 1-2 finish for the red, white and blue.
