LastmonthIlostmy friend, and one of my fa- vorite boxing coaches, Don Moore. He was there for me in a time where there were no box- ing coaches or box- ing gyms in town. I would see him in the weight room at Red Bluff Fitness work- ing out with the other older guys in their red ten- nis shoes, They had a club, The Red Shoes Team. They would meet every morning and work out and brighten up the gym with their jokes. Great group of guys. Don always had a hand- some smile for all the la- dies and was always so easy to talk to. I complained to him one day that it was my dream to be a fighter, but in Red Bluff, there was no place to train and no one to spar with. He shocked me by saying he'd spar with me. I was so excited. I brought my gear in the next day. We put on the headgear and gloves, and Don, who was in his 60s at the time and I was in my 20s, gave me one of the best sparring sessions I'd ever had. He also gave me some great advice, which I am sure he'd want me to share with all the young fighters out there. He said, "Punch the shoulders hard, it tires them out and makes them drop their hands, so you can hit their head easier. Also, aim for the heart; you can make it stop for a second and shock them." Great advice, still warms my heart to think of it. Very old school techniques that you don't see much of these days. We would have quite a few sparring sessions where he would impart his wis- dom to me and beat me up gently. He gave me many of my fundamentals that stick with me to this day. I knew he'd been sick this year, and when I'd see him, he still looked movie star handsome and had the charm of a salesman. His daughter Rose, a friend of mine, told me he passed and invited my husband and me to the celebration of life. We went. It was packed, stand- ing room only. All the Red Shoe Team guys were there, wearing their red shoes, of course. His lovely wife, Betty, was there, and she had all these pictures set out. She said he was quite a boxer in his day and could have been a contender. He was, in fact, good friends and a sparring partner with the champ, Rocky Marci- ano! I was floored! I had no clue that my friend and coach trained with one of the greats. I had John take a picture of one of the pic- tures on display that shows a young Don (on the left) and Rocky (on the right). If I could go back, I would have spent some time with Don and asked him a million questions about his life, maybe even recorded it so I'd have it to listen to. I am sad that Red Bluff has lost a lo- cal legend, and I am sad that his wife and kids and grand kids and friends will not get to hear his jokes anymore or see that great smile. I am certain, though, that we will all see him again one day. 2016 has been heavy with loses of my friends and family. My heart goes out to all who have suf- fered loss, and I pray all find His comfort. On another note, I would like to thank my friends, Chris Hamill and Kathleen Coleman-Hamill, for their generous donation to our non-profit, Psycho Fitness & MMA, Inc. It is because of donations like theirs that we are able to provide free boxing and kickboxing classes to youth who can't afford to pay. I have more than 15 kids that are active in boxing right now, and they are all amazing. As we close out the year, we will happily take any donations to help us keep our doors open, and you will get a tax deduction. So, Psycho Fit- ness or the IRS? As I go forward in the new year, I plan on im- parting some of Don's old school wisdom to the kids at the gym. Beat the arms 'til they drop, don't charge in headfirst, don't watch the eyes- watch the chest — you can see all the punches before they happen. I will leave the heart punching nugget for my adult stu- dents. And to you all, I bid you Merry Christmas. Spend time with your loved ones, pray for each other, give hugs freely, you never know how long you will have them. God bless. If you are familiar with a wonderful yet pricey per- sonal care product called Salt Rub by Or- igins, you may know that for some very odd reason it has been dis- continued. I know. How could they do this? In its place, Origins now offers some kind of ginger scrub concoction that contains sugar and spice. I think it is just aw- ful, which makes me even happier that I know how to make my own version of the salt rub. Are you thinking what I'm think- ing? This may be the per- fect gift you've been searching for — one you can make yourself for many people on your hol- iday gift list, or your any- time-of-year gift list, for that matter. It is so easy that you could make it to- day and gift it tomorrow. Authentic salt rub is a mixture of salt and oil that resembles wet, slushy snow. Unlike bath salts that are used in a bathtub, salt scrubs are used in the shower. So you have a bet- ter idea, here is an exam- ple of the instruction you would print on a tag for a finished salt scrub: "After cleansing the skin, turn off the shower water. Scoop a small hand- ful of salt scrub, and rub in a circular motion all over your skin. Rinse with water. You can wash again if you desire, but you will enjoy the greatest bene- fit if you simply towel dry without soaping up again. If used every time you take a shower, dry skin will be a distant memory. The salt helps get rid of all those dead skin cells, and the oil seals in the moisture." It is so easy to make your own version of the Origins Salt Rub. The main ingredient is Epsom salt, which is available online and in any drug- store or supermarket. It's cheap! Another option, because of its healing properties, is non-food grade sea salt. The other ingredient is oil. You can use sweet al- mond oil to emulate our favorite Origins product, or unscented baby oil. Both Epsom salt and sweet almond oil have natural relaxing and soothing properties, so this is not just about exfo- liation and fragrance. Pour Epsom salt into a bowl or large container. Slowly pour in your oil of choice while stirring. Keep adding oil until it looks and feels like very wet snow. While it's not necessary, you can stir in a few drops of an essen- tial oil, such as lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint or spearmint, to add fra- grance and aroma. Want to color your product to match its fragrance or add a unique signature? Add several drops of soap colorant, which is avail- able online or in craft stores. As you select your con- tainers for presentation, keep in mind this gift is meant to be used in the shower, so glass may not be the wisest choice! There are plenty of plastic and acrylic options.
