The event is free and starts at 6:30 am at the Bill Williams Riv- er National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. Bring water, lunch, sturdy shoes, binoculars, and bird identifi - cation books. You can participate all day or part of the day. The Christmas Bird Count covers a variety of habitats on the refuge, in- cluding fl ood generated cottonwood- willow riparian forests, mesquite bosques, desert uplands, old agricul- tural fi elds, and areas of Lake Havasu and the Bill Williams River delta. Be- tween 100-120 species are typically observed, including several rare and endangered species. These areas are accessed by foot, vehicle, kayak, or boat. Transportation to most sites is provided by the refuge. The area around the refuge visitor center is ac- cessible and available for those who wish to participate but have diffi culty walking over uneven terrain. No need to be a master birder to participate. Participants are grouped in teams with at least one member experienced in both bird identifi cation and the area they will be counting. Each count takes place in an established 15-mile wide di- ameter circle, and is organized by a count compiler. Count volunteers follow specifi ed routes counting every bird they see or hear all day. Data collected during the count help the Audubon Society and other organizations assess the health of bird populations across the West- ern Hemisphere.
