While some words like sky, water, or hunt may occur across the board in some form, other words like kachina or buffalo are culturally or region- ally specifi c. Motifs and styles often refl ect differences in people groups, as well. For example, the styles and motifs of NW coast tribes such as Kwakiutl, Tlingit, or Salish consist of stylized line drawings incorporating water, fi sh and other sea creatures refl ective of their culture and envi- ronment, while the motifs of desert southwest tribes typically are more geometric and depict desert animals and motifs like coyote, bighorn sheep, and mountains. Similarly, though the Thunderbird can be found in the art of almost every native American peo- ple group, his depiction varies greatly from region to region. Here in Quartzsite, we are fortunate to have several beautiful Rock Art Sites close to town. Petroglyphs can be seen at Dripping Springs and along a rock outcropping in Tyson Wash. The Tyson Wash site also has grinding holes and a small cave. In both loca- tions water is typically present year- round. The famous Bouse Fisherman Geoglyph can be found along Plomosa Road, while other less well-preserved intaglios are located by Q Mountain and on CA Hwy. 95 north of Blythe. When you visit the sites, spend some time experiencing the images. Look at them separately, in context as a group, and as part of the environment. What do you see? What do you hear? Let the images speak to you. You do not have to be an archeologist, linguist, or a tribal elder to hear what the rocks will say to you. Tune in to nature and to the Rock Art site, and in your heart you will hear the rocks speak. For more information on Rock Art and maps to local Rock Art sites, as well as everything for all your rock- hounding, prospecting, and lapidary needs, visit RocksInMyHead at Rice Ranch Space A37 in Quartzsite, 10am to 5pm, 7 days a week. Our phone # is 605-376-8754. We have books and in- formation on Rock Art, as well as Na- tive Artifacts and fabulous Petroglyph replicas created by a local artist from Page, Arizona. I am requesting 18 microscopes for my students to be able to explore the world around them. I would love to have the students go out and fi nd things like a leaf or bug to look at under the microscope. I think it will open a whole world to them in ways we just do not have access to at this time." DonorsChoose.org enables teach- ers to request materials and resourc- es for their classrooms and makes these project requests available to individual donors through its web- site. Donors can give $1 or more to projects that interest them, which are searchable by school name, teacher name, location, school subject, material, and keywords. DonorsChoose.org then purchases necessary supplies and ships them directly to the schools. Every proj- ect contains a line-item budget and a description of the project. Best Buy Education matched donations from donors. Dangiolini said, "Thank you to ev- eryone that helped with getting the word out we just got fully funded. The kids will have their microscopes right after we get back in January, they are super excited. Thanks to a great community for helping our students." WE ARE BACK for another season!
