Winter storms are expected during this time of the year. Tornadoes generally start forming in early spring. Both bring their share of trouble. Winter storms with heavy snow, strong winds, icing, sleet, and freezing rain can lead to hazardous driving conditions, frozen and busted pipes, power outages, floods from melting snow and ice, and much more. Regardless of the severity of a winter storm, you should plan ahead to remain safe during these events. Winterize your home and check your heating systems before winter arrives. • Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out. • Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year. • Leave the heat set no lower than 55° F if you will be away from home during cold weather. Prepare your car for winter weather driving. • Keep the gas tank full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing. • Keep an emergency kit in your car. e kit should include: a phone charger, battery-powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries, blanket, booster cables, bottled water, nonperishable high-energy foods and a bag of sand or cat litter.
