8A Daily News – Saturday, July 28, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Arvind Khetia, engineer and a Hindu: The sages of ancient India, realizing the nature of ultimate reality as transcendental and all-pervading, concluded that, "Truth is one; sages call it by different names." This profound statement defines two aspects of every religion. The first is that spiritual truths are universal. They form the inner spirit of every religion that allows one to grow spiritually. The other is its name and form as expressed by its scripture, rituals, symbols, doctrines and dogma. difference among religions? JUST A DIFFERENT NAME Voices of Faith What is the biggest What controls you? Proverbs 4:23 says, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." Our heart is the reservoir for all our thoughts and actions. What we believe about ourselves affects every motive, thought, action, attitude, and habit formed in our lives. If our heart's reservoir contains unresolved past hurts, it will contaminate our per- spective in life. It is essential to change our thought process, to change our life's perspective. Have you ever used your nega- The significant differences we see among religions are due to the differences in their external manifestations, because different religions have evolved at different times, locations and in different social and cultural environments. Unfortunately, spiritual truths remain unexplored, when the cultural norms and the external aspects of religions overshadow their underlying spiritual values. Then, the dif- ferences appear so absolute that one is led to believe that one's religion is the only "truth," and that other religions are false. Consequently, religious extremists are ready to kill, and even die, in the name of religion. Swami Vivekananda has stated, "Let us be no more the worshippers of creeds or sects with small limited notions of God, but see God in everything in the universe." Therefore, for a religion to be a blessing, God and religion must be understood in their spiritual context. Then only will the dif- ferences among religions not seem as absolute and divisive. Rushdy El-Ghussein, former president of the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City: This is really a big and dif- ficult question. There are so many differences between the various religions that it is impossible to think of one between them all or even between Islam and all other reli- gions. But the Islamic concept behind the differences is that it is by God's permission. "Mankind was but one nation, but differed (later). Had it not been for a Word that went forth before from thy Lord, their differences would have been settled between them." (Qur'an10:19) FREEDOM TO CHOOSE There is one God alone who created all, and after creat- ing mankind he sent messengers and prophets to provide guidance to the truth. There are also signs in nature and within the soul of mankind directing toward the reality of God. But people differed with each other, forgot the mes- sage, distorted it and made up what seemed satisfying to themselves or what gave them power over others. God could have forced everyone to his way, but he gives mankind the freedom to choose, and he uses the differences to encourage people to observe and think and to compete in virtue and piety, thus potentially leading them closer to God and his message. Personally, I prefer to focus on the commonalities among religious persuasions than the differences. This will bring humanity closer to each other and might lead us to cooperate and reach the goals that God intends human beings achieve. VOICES OF FAITH tive power to influence others? Have you ever negatively manipu- lated someone? Have you ever used drama to play on others' emotions? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, something is con- trolling you. We have no right to control oth- ers through our emotional traumas – or because of them. Control issues are rooted in broken trust, betrayal, and unforgiveness. Let's look at the profile of one with control issues. Controllers emotionally grasp at others like a lifeline. They smother relationships the same way we snuff out a candle. They pressure others to conform to their need, desire, or preference. They are not content to let others be who they are. At the same time they keep their heart walled off to protect themselves from further hurt. They tenaciously maintain a facade, so you never see the real person. They are inflexible. church camp offered Seniors The Senior Adult Annual Getaway for those over 50 years of age will be held at the Mt. Lassen Assemblies of God Camp, 37635 Hwy 36E in Miner- al Aug. 20-24. Speakers will be Coco Perez from West Sacra- mento, and Chuck Adams from Modesto. Cabins and RV spaces are avail- able and meals will be provided in the dining hall. Does that sound like you, or some- one you know? how control issue are birthed. It says, "Nor give place to the devil." When we give ground over to satan, he steps in to control our lives. Control issues are fueled through demonic influence, having been given ground through unre- solved hurts from the past. This progression is seen in James 1:13-15 which says, "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am tempted by God'; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full- grown, brings forth death." It is sin to harbor unforgiveness in our hearts. That is why the verse in Proverbs 4:27 tells us to guard our heart. Don't let hurts lie dor- mant and buried in unforgiveness. Be quick to forgive and release the hurt before it gains power over your life. Ephesians 4:27 helps us to see Marilyn Adams GodTalk "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved." That means you. When you receive His forgiveness, you can give it to those who hurt you. He tells us that in Ephesians 4:32, "And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiv- ing one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." Marilyn Adams ministers to Matthew 7:3-4 helps us look at our hearts through God's eyes. It says, "And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own women -- especially those who are incarcerated -- and is a leader of intercessors -- people who focus their prayers on others and on the Kingdom -- throughout Tehama County. A San Diego native, Cordileone was installed as Oakland's bishop in May, 2009. His time in the East Bay "has given him a deep understanding of the radical- ly diverse cultural composition of the Bay Area and a dedication to multicul- tural ministry," church spokesman George Wesolek said. At a news conference Friday morning at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, Cordileone Cordileone, 56, was appointed to the adding that he hopes to understand both aspects better as he works to "learn the lay of the land" in his new parish. Cordileone has been a noted propo- nent of Proposition 8, the 2008 law passed by California voters to outlaw same-sex marriage. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide in October whether it will hear arguments on the controversial law, which in 2010 was struck down as unconstitutional by a lower court. Cordileone is also chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage. Asked at the conference abuse, he replied, "I'm for marriage and against abuse." for his stance about Prop. 8 and priest accepted the position with a speech he repeated in English and Spanish. "The cultural diversity in San Francis- co is a strength and a challenge," he said, He added, "Marriage can only come about through the embrace of a man and a woman coming together. I don't see how that is discriminatory against any- one." Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye?" Our plank perspective, devel- oped from unresolved issues, clouds our vision. We can only see what is wrong with others, but not ourselves. If you have never con- sidered Jesus' death on the cross for yourself, now is the time. Jesus died for you. He paid the full penalty of your sins and now gives you for- giveness. Did you deserve it? No, no one deserves God's gift of eternal life. Yet, He says in Romans 10:13,
