ByScottCamp Whatdomostpeople hear when they hear the word revival? What do you think when you hear that word? In my conver- sation with lots of folks about revival, most often they think that revival is something a church does in order to grow the church. It's usually thought of as a series of meetings. An out of town speaker who comes in, preaches, lots of gospel music, people get saved, the speaker leaves, and, perhaps, the church in- creases in size, perhaps not. Whatever the belief, the general idea is that revival is something that the church "does" in order to reach lost people. Well, of course, the church OUGHT to be reaching lost people, shouldn't it? Certainly so, but evan- gelism and revival are two different things, and when we confuse those ideas, then we're in dan- ger of not seeing either one occur. Perhaps the most sig- nificant thing to under- stand about revival is that it's not something the church, or individu- als actually DO. Revival is not, or should not be, a program of a church. It is a sovereign act of God in His timing, where He chooses, and usually in a manner completely be- yond human control or understanding. Revival is not about church growth, it is about personal holiness. God's plan for the revival of His church is personal holiness of His people… the ones for whom Jesus died. Revival does not have as its goal the sav- ing of souls. Certainly in revival, souls are saved, but that's the result of believers being revived. You can see this truth in Biblical records and in the experience of the church throughout his- tory. God's people are confronted over their sin by the Holy Spirit, they are convicted of their sin, grieved by it, repent, are forgiven… Here is a helpful pat- tern for seeing how God often works with various classes of people: Believers who have be- come complacent in their relationship with Jesus are convicted by the Holy Spirit of their negligence, repent, are forgiven and return to a more inti- mate relationship with Him. (Revelation 3:20) As a result, they become more fruitful in their wit- ness, and unbelievers are drawn to Jesus. (Matthew 5:16) Prodigals who have wandered away from rela- tionship, both with their Savior and with other be- lievers, become aware of their backslidden be- havior, repent, cry for forgiveness and are re- ceived back into fullness of relationship with their church and with their Savior. (Luke 15:17-20) Unbelievers with no in- terest in spiritual matters are convicted by the Holy Spirit of their lost condi- tion, see their helpless- ness, cry out to God for relief, repent, are forgiven and drawn into God's kingdom. (Acts 2:37-39) Notice that believers are the first to become aware of their condition and repent. There are many people in churches in Red Bluff who have "left their first love" while remaining in church and even now are being con- fronted by the Holy Spirit and called to repent. (Revelation 2:4-5) Does this describe you? There are others in our community who grew up in the church, perhaps were active as children in an AWANA program or youth group and as adults have never been commit- ted to any church. Others have had a church expe- rience in which they were wounded and walked away, swearing never to return. Do you see your- self here? If believers are the first fruits of revival and prod- igals follow soon after, there are many who have never heard the Gospel, never understood the dif- ference between religion and relationship with the Living God, and at some point God opens their heart to hear His call, and they come. (Romans 10:8-11) Perhaps this is you… What is the result in every case? Relationships with Jesus become deeper and richer and God is glo- rified. One final thought: the biblical record and church history tell us that when true revival oc- curs, it is not just that the kingdom is expanded, but the community is trans- formed. Here are a few signs that a revival has occurred in a community: Economic conditions improve and lead to a dis- cernible lessening of pov- erty. Crime and corruption diminish throughout the community. There is a marked change in social enter- tainment and vices as Kingdom values are inte- grated into the rhythm of daily life. Restored hope and joy lead to a decline in di- vorce, bankruptcy, sui- cide, domestic abuse and addictions of all kinds. God wants to trans- form our community. Do you hear his call to repen- tance and revival?
