Our Needs and Opportunities B uilt in 1956, 729 South Shields Street has always played an integral part in Epsilon Beta's legacy. The Epsilon Beta House Board works hard to regularly maintain and upgrade the facility. In 2012, the House Board invested $250,000 to renovate the main floor. The TV room and dining room spaces were reconfigured, taking out the TV room sliding door, adding a sliding wall between the two rooms, and updating the ceiling, carpet, lighting, and furniture. The living room received new carpet, paint, and furniture. New floor tile and cupboard storage was added in the entry and hallway. A set of Kappa formal crested dishes for 200 are now stored where the old phones were. In 2013, the House Board invested $100,000 to purchase complete sets of new furniture for all the bedrooms. The house director's apartment also got new bedroom furniture. Over the summer of 2015, the basement was given a complete makeover. The House Board invested $225,000 to create a comfortable, well-lit, usable basement for the chapter women. The old study room was split in two: one side is a chapter council/standards meeting room with conference table and sitting area and the other is a study room with individual study carrels. The old chapter room became a theater with a big screen TV. A bathroom and a beverage bar were added. The new basement is used constantly and has added much-needed usable space to the chapter house. As a result of the House Board's hard work, the entire house, except for the kitchen, has been redone over the past five years. The renovations are tasteful, giving a consistent feel to the house from top to bottom. EB's House Board has been able to do these renovations in a fiscally responsible way, without having to drastically dip into EB's reserve account. While our home at 729 S. Shields St. now looks updated and beautiful, it has become clear we must make a major long-term investment in the size of the chapter house. Greek life at CSU is booming and the student population at the university is growing. If we wish to remain competitive among the other sororities, ensure a quality living environment, and provide our collegiate sisters similar Kappa experiences to what we remember, it is time to expand. our Kappa house was designed for a chapter size of about 80. This is the capacity of our kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is circa 1956; it has never been renovated and appliances have been replaced as they have worn out. There is not enough room to have a Monday night dinner or chapter meeting at the house. Currently, 80 women sign up each week to have a formal dinner at the house on Monday nights, and meetings are held at the Lory Student Center. Initiation last year was done in three rounds. KeePinG oUr SiSterS SaFe The safety of our 193 collegiate members is of utmost importance to the Epsilon Beta House Board. We must offer a structurally sound and updated home for our collegians. Much like our personal homes, our house must be a safe haven that instills confidence in our members and their parents. PreSerVinG oUr leGaCY Membership in the Epsilon Beta Chapter helps create a support system and deeper connection to Colorado State by providing a sense of belonging and community within the university. Additionally, with an increase in numbers of women going through recruitment each year, our home can no longer adequately accommodate our members and potential new members during chapter events. Space is limited and this not only impacts recruitment but also creates a challenge for membership events throughout the year. Some events limit the number of active members who can participate because of the space limitations of our current chapter house. SettinG KaPPa aPart Most of the other sorority houses at CSU have bigger common dining/ meeting space than our beautiful house has. Recently, many have discussed renovating their chapter houses to accommodate growing chapter sizes. In addition, numerous fraternities on campus have made or are completing major changes to their facilities. Competition is strong and we cannot allow Kappa to be left behind other chapters on campus. By remaining steadfast, we will set the pace and establish a plan for our chapter house to remain as the premier facility on campus. 3
