NFL would take a look at "the possibility of ending, or at least limiting" the Thursday night scheduled. The report was followed the next day with a state- ment from an NFL spokes- man: "We are fully commit- ted to Thursday Night Foot- ball and any reports to the contrary are unfounded." As long as Thursday nights represent a chance increaserevenue, thegames are likely going nowhere. Since 2012, games have be- gun in Week 2 and every team in the NFL will be scheduled for a Thursday night. There were limited Thursday packages in pre- viousyears,pluslong-stand- ing traditional Thanksgiv- ing Day games in Detroit and Dallas with a third game added annually since 2006. Included in the Thursday partnership has been CBS, the NFL Network, and most recently,NBC.TheNFLalso startedstreamingThursday night games on Twitter. None of the agreements have been long-term. Andrew Brandt, a former Green Bay executive and a sports business reporter for ESPN, thinks it would be a mistake to assume the NFL isn'tcommittedtoThursday nights. "I would think they're just waiting to set the mar- ket," Brandt said. "It's al- most like they've been playing this cat and mouse game, waiting for a larger commitment next year and beyond. Maybe CBS or NBC will decide they want to go all-in on this." There have been a hand- ful of dreadful Thursday night games — New Eng- land-Houston in Week 3, Cincinnati-Miami in Week 4, Arizona-49ers in Week 5 in particular. The quality of play is compromised because play- ers are at less than their peak. Kennedy, an analyst for the Pac-12 Network and a Raiderssidelinereporterfor the flagship radio station, said,"Youfeeltired.Youfeel worn out. Your body is fa- tigued because it throws off your whole routine." In the latter part of his career, Newberry was lim- ited in practice during the week and often didn't prac- tice at all because it took his body that long to recover. "Even playing on a Mon- day night and having a game the next Sunday on a short week was difficult because you had one less day off," Newberry said. "So to play on Sunday and then play again on Thurs- day? That's tough. Real tough." One former player who didn't mind playing on Thursdays was former Raiders linebacker Kirk Morrison, who thought the benefit of the extra rest following the game out- weighed the short rest pre- ceding it. "Never ask a player dur- ing the week if they like playing on Thursday," Mor- rison said. "Ask them on Friday if they like having the weekend off." Raiders FROMPAGE1 But even before, and cer- tainly after, the regular sea- son tussles have been mem- orable.ChrisPaulandSteph Curry have formed a re- spectful rivalry. Draymond Green and Blake Griffin have formed a vocal one. You had the Dahntay Jones bump of Draymond Green. The Doc Rivers sar- castic response. The 'Cool story, Glenn,' response to the response from Green. The time the Warriors bench mocked a pair of er- rant Blake Griffin 3s. And the multiple, NBA-style 'hold me back' dust-ups. "Cowardly basketball," Griffin once said, post ejec- tion, of the Warriors. So there's built in tension between the two teams. But the dramatic rivalry was in- jected with a bit more spice this offseason. Mo Speights, a War- rior fan favorite the past few seasons, crossed en- emy lines in free agency. He's a Clipper now. And he's playing well, giving them much-needed scor- ing punch from the backup big spot. "I'm really happy for him," Steve Kerr said. "But I wouldn't mind if he was in the Eastern Conference." Part of the reason Spei- ghts left is because of Kevin Durant's arrival in Golden State, which forced a ros- ter reform for the War- riors. Speights was one of the many casualties. But Durant doesn't en- ter this rivalry with a blank slate. He has rich history with the Clippers, as well. And a successful track re- cord. In 30 career regu- lar season games, he has averaged nearly 29 points against the Clippers. Back in 2014 — the se- ries after the Clippers beat the Warriors — the Thun- der eliminated the Clip- pers. Durant averaged 33.2 points in the six games. He had 39 points and 16 rebounds in the closeout game. The Clippers have al- ways had a Durant prob- lem. They have an empty slot at the small forward position, often filled with flawed veterans on mini- mum deals. Durant shreds the mismatch. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute will open on him Wednesday. But the Clip- pers often close games with either Jamal Crawford or Austin Rivers around the core four of Paul, Griffin, J.J. Redick and DeAndre Jordan. Among that group, there's not a realistic Du- rant defender. The best luck the Clippers ever had was for a brief stretch in Game 4 back in 2014. Paul guarded Durant, harrassed him into some rushed post- ups and crucial turnovers. But that always felt gim- micky and, when facing the Warriors, Paul will almost always be needed on Curry in the game's crucial mo- ments.
