WhenImovedtoRed Bluff four years ago to be- come the new pastor at High Point Assembly, my family and I were excited for a new chapter in our lives and minis- try. God has done some amazing things in four years and I could write page upon page to share all that He has done, but that's not what this article is about. I have learned that God's calling always comes with both challenges and blessings. One of the unex- pected blessings I have ex- perienced has been in de- veloping rich and mean- ingful relationships with many of the other pastors here in our town. A little over two years ago, I be- gan to join together with several of them to pray for our community, and spe- cifically that God would bring transforming revival to Red Bluff. Now when you hear that word "revival" it can conjure up many differ- ent ideas. For some it's a big tent with a loud evan- gelist. For others it's Billy Graham in a stadium somewhere. That's not what real revival is. Re- vival is first and foremost about personal, spiritual renewal but along with it comes community trans- formation. That includes everything from reduc- tions in crime, to a thriv- ing business sector, agri- culture increases, creation of jobs, excelling educa- tion, drought relief, in- creased opportunities, and the list goes on. So, as we've been praying for transformation. It's really about a whole new mind set and approach to life. Yet it isn't new at all, it's just been forgotten. What's been forgotten is God. Many deny His ex- istence, and yet most still call upon His name in times of trouble. He is the missing ingredient. When the pastors pray together, we are asking God to re- veal Himself to the peo- ple of this community, so they would begin to trust him and realize He is the source of every good thing. We ask God to heal hurts within families and bring reconciliation to broken homes. We pray wisdom for our governmental lead- ers and protection over our law enforcement offi- cers and fire fighters. We pray for those in health care, for our teachers and educators, and for our lo- cal businesses to prosper. We pray that people in our community will treat one another with respect and kindness. We pray for rain to end our drought, among many other things. Ulti- mately we pray that God would once again be Lord over this community. Can I just say that God is up to something? Un- precedented things are happening, and people are being stirred in their spirit. As for my pastor friends and me, well, we're having a blast! And the reason all of this is hap- pening is that we came to- gether in a way that God honors. We crossed de- nominational lines, cast aside our minute theologi- cal differences, and began to seek God with a unified front. God forgive us for trying to do it any other way. I've heard people call our city "Dead-Bluff" and I'm sure you have too. At its root is a sense of hope- lessness. It comes from seeing broken homes, in- creased crime, rampant substance abuse, neglected and abused children, homelessness, neighbor- hood decay, and an over- all belief that things will never get better. Well, that's where God can make the difference. What if we were to in- vite Him back into our homes and our schools and our government? What if we started to live by the precepts and wis- dom found in His Word? What if we all could agree that our nations experi- ment of life without God has failed miserably and then actively seek God to intervene on our behalf? What if we believed Red Bluff could be a shining example of renewal and hope for a different kind of future? I would suggest to you that it is not only possible, but it's already starting to happen. It is all based upon this scripture in 2 Chronicles 7:14. "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." So, if you too have a heart for community transformation and per- sonal spiritual renewal, why don't you join us? We pray every Wednesday morning at First Baptist Church 6:30-9 a.m. Come and be a part of this, be- cause God is up to some- thing. Thank you my fellow pastors, Ken Auld, Scott Camp, Bruce Cloutier, Ed Grant, Elmore Heitman, Daryl Jones, Dave Lam- berson, John McKim, Jesse Morris, Chris Offi- cer, Mark Roberts, Paul Wright, and the many laity who join us in prayer. You are an unexpected bless- ing in my life. DavidBlytheisthe Senior Pastor of High Point Assembly of God and current president of the Red Bluff Ministerial Association. ECUMENICAL George Otis, Jr. to speak at next Faith Works The Associated Press VATICAN CITY Pope Fran- cis confirmed plans Mon- day to make a 2018 trip to Ireland, a Roman Catholic country devastated by the clerical sex abuse scandal, where same-sex marriages are legal and a constitu- tional ban on abortion is being questioned. Francis confirmed the plans during a meeting with visiting Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny. "The pope has confirmed that he is coming to Ire- land for the World Meeting of Families," Kenny told re- porters. The prime minister said talks were under way about whether Francis would visit Northern Ireland, which St. John Paul II avoided as pope in 1979 on security grounds. Kenny harshly criticized theVaticanin2011overwhat he called its "dysfunction" in responding to the abuse scandal, accusing the Holy See of frustrating an Irish investigation into the prob- lem and seeking to preserve its own reputation instead. Ireland closed its em- bassy in what was seen as retaliation, though the em- bassy reopened in 2014 and Kenny said the diplomatic breakdown was over. Kenny said he agreed with Francis' position on fighting sex abuse, calling the pope's comments on the topic "very strong."
