Lazy O Ranch in Red Bluff is a new member of the American Angus As- sociation, according to Allen Moczygemba, CEO of the national breed or- ganization headquartered in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The association, with more than 25,000 active adult and junior mem- bers, is the largest beef breed association in the world. Its computerized records include detailed information on more than 18 million registered An- gus. The association re- cords ancestral informa- tion and keeps production records and genomic data on individual animals to develop industry-lead- ing selection tools for its members. The programs and services of the asso- ciation and its entities — Angus Genetics Inc., An- gus Productions Inc., Cer- tified Angus Beef LLC and the Angus Foundation — help members to advance the beef cattle business by selecting the best animals for their herds and mar- keting quality genetics for the beef cattle indus- try and quality beef for consumers. CATTLE LazyO Ranch joins Angus Association The California Cattle- men's Association Centen- nial Celebration coffee ta- ble book, with 106 ranch and business histories, will include Hemsted Livestock Trucking, with Jerry Hem- sted submitting its history. In 1878 great-grandfather Terrance Hemsted and two brothers pushed a push- cart to Redding and home- steaded where Costco is to- day. After he proved his homestead, he walked to Sacramento, caught the transcontinental train back to Iowa and picked up his wife and two daugh- ters, Tollie and Edith. They caught the train back to Sacramento, bought a team and wagon, loaded their worldly goods and returned to Redding. Both home- steaded, and proved up on their 160 acres. Hemsted Drive by the Sacramento River was Jer- ry's great-grandmother's land. Grandfather Karl was born in 1891, and younger brother Phil, who became a Redding contractor that built many of the homes. Aunt Edith was the first woman County Clerk in California. Karl Hemsted and Lil- lian Estep were married in 1911 in Oakrun, CA. He was a sheepman, and they had five children. Twins Don and Mildred in 1914, Jerry's father Norman Karl " Jim" in 1918, and twins Richard "Dick" and Robert "Bob" in 1922. Don started Hemsted Van and Storage, Cal PUC # 8, a civilian flight instructor in World War II, and after the war, a partnership in H & H Flight Service. Jim married Barbara Helen Kelly, June 21, 1941 and they had two children, Jerry and Judy. After they married, Jim was a park ranger in Lassen Volcanic National Park, spending the winter in a tent cabin with infant Jerry. Jim next worked at J. T. McDonald building Pit # 3, at Big Bend on the Pit River. In 1943 Jim started being buying and selling cattle, a cow trader, and buying and selling fat hogs to Langer Kretner in South Eureka, and Rocking R Meat Com- pany, Freshwater in Eureka. In 1948 he bought his first truck because he couldn't find a trucker to pick up small lots of cattle and hogs. In 1950, Jim bought his first cab-over truck and trailer, a straight deck. In a Redding shop he had a calf basket built, 16 feet long, for over-top the 24 foot box, with a loading chute by the cab. Jim bought his first Mer- ritt Trailer manufactured in Portland, Oregon in 1954. This was truck # 6. Ever- ett Merritt came down to Cottonwood, and with Jim, they designed the double deck part of the truck. It paid off when hauling year- ling cattle because they could increase the capac- ity from 38,000 pounds to 51,000 pounds. At one time they had 15 trucks, licensed for Wash- ington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona and Montana. Jerry's mother Barbara was the dispatcher for Hemsted Livestock Transportation. Between 1958 and 1981, Hemsted Trucking hauled between 100,000 and 125,000 head per year. Jerry doesn't miss the livestock trucking industry, but he misses all the cus- tomers he did business with over the years. At one time there were 45,000 head of cattle ran on the Klamath Marsh. Now there are only about 5,000 head since Nature Conservancy purchased the ground and set it aside for the snub-nose sucker, salmon, spotted owl, etc. The handwriting was on the wall when the Cali- fornia Aquaduct in Central California changed the live- stock industry. The major- ity of the rangeland was go- ing into orchards and row- crops. For example, Adolf Gill and Phil Statler used to run 25,000 head of year- ling cattle between Tracy and Santa Nella each win- ter and spring. In 1985-1986 Jerry was Tehama County Cattlemen Association (TCCA) pres- ident, and his first job as President was in March 1985; a cold snowstorm oc- curred when the oak trees were in bud. Over 8,000 head of cattle died from Oakbud Poisoning, from Newville/Paskenta to Ono, California. As President, Jerry was the spokesperson for the cattlemen when tele- vision, radio, and newspa- pers sent reporters to cover the story. One rancher lost over 600 head of cows and calves. 1989, Hemsted was TCCA Man of the Year and in 2005 Jerry's wife Joan and Jean Barton were rec- ognized as TCCA Men of the Year. California Cattlemen As- sociation President Jim Timmons asked Jerry to be CCA Membership Chair in 1986, followed by two years for Myron Openshaw, and two years for Les Guthrie. Hemsted was the National Cattlemen's Association Top Hand Recruiter winning the saddle. CCA 2nd Vice President for three years, followed by 1st VP in 1997-98 and CCA President in 1999-2000. He was chairman of the Na- tional Transportation Com- mittee for National Cat- tlemen's Association, and served on the first Board of Directors for National Cat- tlemen's Beef Association. He also served as Member- ship Chairman of the Pol- icy Committee for NCBA. In Oct. 2016, Jerry Hemsted was honored as California Livestock Man of the Year by California State Cham- ber of Commerce.. When Jerry went out of CCA office, wife Joan be- came active in California CattleWomen as state Presi- dent 2003-04, after serving as the last Tehama County CowBelle President in 1995- 1996, and TCCB CowBelle of the Year in 1996. Ameri- can National CattleWomen Region VI Director for four years, 2007 to 2010, and recognized as ANCW Out- standing CattleWoman of the Year in 2014. In earlier years Joan had developed an educational program "Music, Art, Literature and Cows" she presented to Cal- ifornia and Western United States cattlewomen units. Until November 1, Jerry Hemsted managed four- teen ranches for Bengard Ranches. JeanBartonhasbeen writing her column in the Daily News since the early 1990s.
