DANHONDA—BAYAREANEWSGROUP Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said the season-opening two-point conversion call "set a tone" for this season. ByJimmyDurkin BayAreaNewsGroup ALAMEDA The Oakland Raiders' road to resurgence was clear from the season opener for general man- ager Reggie McKenzie. "The guys felt like they were go- ing to win the game," McKenzie said Thursday. "Being in the locker room afterwards, it felt like they were sup- posed to win." That opener, of course, was the dramatic 35-34 win over the New Orleans Saints that included coach Jack Del Rio's bold and successful decision to go for a game-winning two-point conversion with 47 sec- onds to play. "It set a tone," McKenzie said of that call. "It set a tone for the con- fidence that the coaching staff had in the players and the players had in each other." McKenzie spent 30 minutes Thurs- day chatting with the Raiders' beat writers. Here are the highlights from that session. • While Friday marks 60 days from when outside linebacker Al- don Smith reportedly applied for re- instatement from his league banish- ment, McKenzie has yet to hear from the league. "Those guys, they'll let us know in due time," McKenzie said of the NFL. "I'm sure they're in communication with each other with that. But they don't fill us in on anything in that process." There's a long list of requirements Smith must complete to be reinstated from his stage three banishment for substance abuse. That includes de- tails on his treatment, any use of sub- stances during his banishment and meetings with commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL's medical per- sonnel. Should he be reinstated, McKenzie wouldn't rule out him making an im- pact this season. "If he's cleared, we're going to go through the proper channels and see where he's at physically and mentally and all that," McKenzie said. Both teams started sluggish, with Red Bluff leading after the first period just 6-2, but the Eagles woke up in the second period to take an 18-15 lead into halftime. The Spartans narrowed the lead in the third period to 33-32, but in a big final period Red Bluff put up 23 points to come away with the victory. Derek Gordon was the top scorer for the Spartans with 19 points, including four 3-pointers; Brayden Hutchins had 12 points with one 3-pointer and Eric Spencer scored nine, with two from outside the arc. Payton Edwards and Ty Clement each scored four; Evan Tanner had three and D.J. Robinson and Dawson Voth each had a pair. The Spartans began play in the Wheatland tournament Thursday against Wheatland and tournament play is scheduled to continue through Saturday. Senior Alavaro Dlafuente was named player of the game, with two rebounds in his debut. "First high school basketball game ever," said coach Steve Shellabarger. "Alvie was fun to watch play. Will get more time in the fu- ture." Colin Kaepe- rnick is selling the San Jose mansion he purchased only two years ago, doing so as an "invest- ment decision," he said Thurs- day through a San Francisco 49ers spokesman. That explanation won't ex- actly silence speculation this could be a preemptive step to leave the 49ers, who reworked his contract in October and granted him a chance to opt out for free agency in March. As Kaepernick walked onto the University of Central Flor- ida practice field Thursday, he was asked about his house, and rather than comment, he smiled and kept walking. Kaepernick's house went on the market Wednesday for $2.89 million, according to his listing agency. Shortly after signing a lucrative contract extension in 2014, he spent $2.7 million to buy the 4-bedroom, 6-bath house is 4,569 square feet and located in the Silver Creek neighborhood of south San Jose. News of the listing was first reported by Los Angeles Times' "Hot Property" column on celeb- rity and luxury homes. Asked earlier this week if he's thinking about where he'll be next season, Kaepernick re- plied: "I'm focused on Chicago this week. I'm not thinking that far down the road." TUNEIN By Josh Dubow The Associated Press SANTACLARA Washington coach Chris Petersen is happy to let oth- ers do the politicking and lobby- ing when it comes to the College Football Playoff. He believes what the fourth- ranked Huskies do on the field will speak loud enough. Washing- ton has its final chance to state its case Friday night in the Pac-12 championship game against No. 9 Colorado. "I have confidence that the powers that be will get these things right," Petersen said. "I felt that way when I was at Boise and they usually did. We'll see how this plays out." Things are looking good for the Huskies (11-1, No. 4 CFP) after they moved up a spot in the play- off rankings this week. One more win and they will likely make the semifinals in Petersen's third sea- son at the helm. Washington had not reached double figures in wins for a season in the 13 years before Petersen's arrival. But Petersen has built Wash- ington into a power just like he did at Boise State when he led the Broncos to seven straight double- digit win seasons and two BCS bowl games. "I expected to be good from the second we got here," he said. "I think that's what players expect, I think that's what coaches expect, and when it's not like that, you're frustrated as all get-out and try- ing to figure out why it's not right. With that being said, we all know it takes some time to develop a program and how you're going to do things." Mike MacIntyre had a much tougher turnaround task with the Buffaloes (10-2, No. 8 CFP). Colo- rado was 25-61 in seven seasons before MacIntyre arrived from San Jose State. But he methodically rebuilt the program to where it is now a sur- prise participant in the Pac-12 ti- tle game with an outside chance of making it to the playoff with a win over the Huskies and some help elsewhere. "I just think a lot of people on the outside didn't expect us to be here," quarterback Sefo Liufau said. "They want UW for play- off implications or anything like that. Basically the most impor- tant thing is what we want in the locker room and we want to win." Here are some other things to watch: BIG TIME QBS Both teams rely heavily on their quarterbacks. Washington's Jake Browning was selected as the top offensive player in the conference after throwing for a school-record 40 TDs and only seven INTs. Brown- ing ranks fourth in the FBS in passing efficiency (181.6).
