John was an avid amateur golfer and competed for many years in Alabama Golf Association tournaments, and even more weekend grudge matches with his beloved Matthews Marauders at The Mountain Brook Club. John is survived by his wife and best friend of 46 years, Caroline; sons, John and Christopher; six grandchildren, Helen, Christopher, Julia, Alexander, John, and Margaret; sister, Julia; brother, James; and several nieces and nephews.
