Alabama Beta at Its Strongest with Room to Grow Undergraduates Recruit 50 New Members, Rank First in Academics SIGMA PHI EPSILON T he Alabama Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is at its most dominate point in Chapter history. The Chapter is the largest it has ever been with the highest GPA among IFC fraternities at 3.45, and we have held that title for 10 of the past 11 semesters. The Sigma class earned a 3.48 GPA. The Chapter also won the Educational Programing award from the university in the spring. Alabama Beta is thriving and only due for further excellence down the road. We are excited to move into the new Chapter House next fall and keep the tradition as the best Chapter on campus. Brothers Raise $7,000 The Chapter held its annual Blackjack Ball in September with Kappa Kappa Gamma. The proceeds from the event benefitted Big Brothers and Big Sisters of West Alabama. The event raised more than $7,000 and attendance was the largest turnout the event has ever seen. Thanks, Brother Cole Howie'17, for organizing the event. Membership Climbs with New Sigma Class This fall, the Chapter welcomed 50 new members. Recruitment Chairman Jared Wyatt '18 said that he believes this class is what the future of this Chapter needs to keep its current success. New members enjoyed Labor Day weekend in Destin, Florida, for a brotherhood retreat and watched the Tide roll over the USC Trojans. Alabama Beta Leads on Campus and in the Community The Chapter hosts leadership seminars once or twice monthly with faculty speakers or community leaders. These events include Safe Zone Training, Suicide Prevention Training, Risk Management Training, an open event with Sharing America's Marrow, ADPi promoting Live Your Oath, Druid City Garden Project with local elementary schools collecting compost, and researching BMI and standardized test scores. We also hold events with three other fraternities and three sororities to bring about positive change in the campus community. Eighty-three percent of the active brothers are involved with other organizations on campus, and it is a requirement of all new members. Capstone Men and Women, CIMG, Alpha Kappa Psi, and University Recreation are just some of the organizations of which they are members and leaders. Out of all the members in those organizations, 24 percent of them hold leadership positions. Brothers participated in many sports this fall. Soccer, football, and ultimate Frisbee were the most popular. Both football teams and the ultimate Frisbee team made the playoffs. The soccer team won the fraternity league championship for the second year in a row. Basketball and softball will be played next semester. Alumni and Parents Events On September 10, the Chapter hosted Alumni Weekend during the Western Kentucky game. Alumni were treated to a tailgate at the house, Chapter updates, and a meal from the Chapter cooking staff. On September 23-25, Family Weekend took place in Tuscaloosa with over 400 family members in attendance. Friday night, there was a family social with live music at The District Room, a tailgate after the Kent State game at the house on Saturday, and brunch on Sunday. We want to thank all parents and family members for the support they have given us. Another special thanks to the Smith, Williams, Kessler, and Serman families for their gracious donations this past year. Please be on the lookout for spring Family and Alumni Weekend dates. This will include the annual Parent/Alumni Golf Tournament. Please contact me if you have any questions. SigEp Alabama Beta has never been better. With the number of active brothers and dedicated alumni, this Chapter's potential is endless. The construction of the new Chapter House will begin in January and should be ready in August. We look forward to sharing our accomplishments with you all.
