Life really changed for me over twenty-one years ago when I had my first child. Up until that time, my vantage point for how to treat children and be treated as a child was based on really flawed parent- ing. The same parenting in the movie Matilda where Harry Worm- wood declared to Matilda " Listen, you little wiseacre: I'm smart, you're dumb; I'm big, you're little; I'm right, you're wrong, and there's nothing you can do about it." Once I had children, I learned Caribou Wilderness, Sunday, Aug. 12 Meet at Chico Park & Ride west lot at 8 am with lunch, water, sun/insect protection and money for ride sharing. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. There was an error in weekend edition front page many things that broke the bonds I had been bearing for years. I real- ized that children are an innocent collateral in the decisions adults make. I learned that children didn't have to earn their food, clothing, shelter or their parents love and that if they were made to feel that way, it was a fundamental betrayal of the responsibilities placed on parents when they have children. Mostly I learned that I had the power as the mom to make things right when they were wrong. The most awe- some power for me was the ability to say I am sorry and ask forgive- ness. Sometimes as a mom, I lost my patience. I still do. Sometimes as a mom I was embarrassing, short on time and cash and sometimes I was insensitive to my children's needs; whether they were perceived needs like candy at the check out counter or legitimate like help with geome- try. What I learned very early in my relationship with my kids is that when I screwed up, I was humble enough to say I was sorry and ask for their forgiveness. Sometimes it was easily given and sometimes we negotiated ways to make things right between us. The love between people become impenetrable when we have the trust that is developed from admit- ting our humanness and asking for and receiving forgiveness. How power- ful and healing it is to have someone realize they were wrong and ask you to pardon their behavior. How safe it feels to live with people who allow you to mess up and allow you to make it right. One of the greatest gifts you can give someone is the ability to be humble and save face at the same time. In our home, we have the do- bonds Faydra Rector You Matter over. The ability to cross the line and simply ask for a do-over. In that asking you are offering the offended party the end of whatever it is you are doing wrong and acknowledging full responsibility for your part. In return, you are asking for the ability to put your- self in check, move on and not be made fun of, hen-pecked or have whatever you were doing used against you, rubbed in your face or held against you in a grudge. You are admitting you were wrong and the other party is accepting that and allowing the air to clear. It has and continues to be very effective with a home full of type-A person- Corning schools meeting The August 2012 regular Corning Union Elemen- tary School District School Board Meeting has been rescheduled from Aug. 8 to Aug.15. This is only $181,955 less than the total valuation of 1921, which was $16,967,555. Sometimes the do-over isn't an option. Sometimes a sincere "I am sorry" is in order. Here is the key to a good sorry- you need to be genuine, you need to know what it is you're sorry for and it is a good idea to express how you believe what you did affected the wounded party and what you would do different if given the opportunity. If you are receiving the sorry, try to be accepting of the gesture and under- stand that if you come from a home where sorry was rarely heard, it can be extremely difficult to say it. Some people equate being sorry with admitting a weakness, abdicating one's authority or giving you an advan- tage to hurt them back. Accepting a sincere apology says as much about your character as the one giving it. When people can feel safe to mess up and receive for- giveness, you will find they become more willing to ask for your kindness. alities.
