Pastimes Arts & entertainment Oh boy have we had the rain this past month. But, I feel artistically dry. The days are shorter, my ener- gy wanes, the garden is sleep- ing and no blooms to cheer me up. The morning was spent making soup. I like the air humid when I'm painting with w a t e r c o l o r s . Humidity keeps the paper from drying too quick- ly. A Victorian house is sketched out, 23" x 30" sheet of paper needing color on it. I just don't have the confidence right now to paint summer on a dreary winter day. The storms have kept me indoors for days and I noticed that the rain has let up. On with the coat, hat, boots, and gloves to head out the door and walk over to double check the Victorian for details that my camera doesn't always get. And good thing I did, the little round doo-dads underneath the roof trim in the photo were really square. Then I wandered over to the Red Bluff Art Gallery. There's a begonia in the front window that I like to visit in hopes of getting a start. Anna was busy with a customer with the phone ringing at the same time, so I toured the rooms to see what was new. Found a clayboard for watercolors, Hmm. Anna became free and we visited, discussing how creativity declines in winter. She pointed out that everyone is creatively dry right now. It's time to go to our reference files for inspiration. Judith Frost came in to set up and paint, so we took time to admire her recently framed watercolor. I do have a reference file at home, consisting of magazine clippings saved for inspiration as visual aids. Much like a garden that uses stored energy for the next year's growing season. March and April will be much better when days are longer. Anna also sug- gested using clippings for points of inspi- ration to design our own illus- trations and then painting what is familiar to us will make it really live. Feeling ener- gized and Anna's phone rings once more, I blew the begonia a kiss and took my leave. However, the rain was still at bay so I decide to eat lunch at La Corona and mull over the things Anna and I talked about, comparing myself to a plant in winter with stor- ing energy waiting to bloom. Another customer recognized me from my picture in the newspaper. We talked about the won- derful and versatile art community here in Red Bluff. I mentioned that comments about the arti- cles could be emailed by way of the online Daily News at Beginner's Easel. As I headed back home the sky was drizzling once more. The house was nice and warm. I turned on the soup to finish cooking and succeeded painting a nice warm summer, Cerulean blue sky around the Victo- rian.
