DylanBrookswouldpunch in the ball for a 2-yard touchdown run to take the lead. The Cardinals grabbed a score early in the fourth quarter. Nolan Peterson picked up 32 yards on fourth down to keep the drive alive and later com- pleted a 24-yard pass to Tyler Grine to get into the red zone. On second and goal, Devin Wunsch found Brendan Stewart in the back of the end zone for an 8-yard score. But a missed extra point kept Anderson ahead. Corn- ing's defense forced An- derson into two fourth down situations with less than three minutes to play. But, Anderson's defense capitalized with two takeaways. David Yates came up with a pick with 2:24 left to play then Chris Hart had an inter- ception of his own for An- derson to keep control of the ball until the end of the game. "Defense was giving us opportunities but offen- sively we couldn't make it happen," Studer said. "Our guys really overachieved for the most part. With the young group that we had, to go out and get eight wins, I'm pretty proud of them for that." Cardinals FROMPAGE1 quarterback Marshal Brose hit Conner McKenzie for 85 yards and Red Bluff was on the board first 7-0 with 4:36 left in the first quar- ter. The teams traded punts, Red Bluff's being short to set up the Wolves on the Spartans 30. A few plays later Seth Park took it in from the 7 to tie it up at 7. Both teams turned to the passing game in the second quarter. Kurt Gip- son hauled in a pass from the 20 to put Shasta up 14-7 and Brose hit Cameron Ortega in the end zone to tie it at 14 with 5:28 left in the half. Over the next few min- utes Park and Vincent Smith would each score to put the Wolves up 28-14. The Spartans drove past midfield and, with 10 sec- onds left in the half, had a couple of shots at the end zone to keep the game within reach. The first missed and the second was intercepted to end the half. The Spartans were able to move the ball on the ground to open the sec- ond half, but Gipson made a great play to break up a sure scoring strike from Brose to Ortega in the end zone and the Wolves took over at their own 34. Red Bluff struggled to stop the run and Smith scored again, putting Shasta up 35-14 with 3:37 left in the third. Shasta recovered a squib kick, one of many it at- tempted in the game, and started at the Red Bluff 34. A tipped pass was very nearly pulled in by Tanner Tweedt to give the Spartans life, but Spencer Ramirez would take it a few plays later and the Wolves wid- ened the margin to 42-14 with 2:46 left in the third. A tired Spartans squad began to make mistakes and, with momentum on their side, the Wolves took advantage. A fumble at midfield was scooped up to set the Wolves up at the Red Bluff 35. Smith took it in for an- other score to open the fourth quarter, 49-14. Confusion on the en- suing kickoff saw the ball fall between a pair of Spar- tans and the Wolves fell on it at the Spartans' 32. But a Wolves' fumble put the ball in Red Bluff's hands at their own 26. The Spartans had trou- ble getting anything going and were forced to punt. Jacob Akana took it into the end zone for the Wolves and time ran out on the Spartans' season. Players have questioned the collective effort and chemistry. Re- cruiting has nosedived, es- pecially on defense. They have twice pinned their hopes on quarterback transfers from lower-divi- sion schools. Even worse than los- ing games, they're losing at their own game. Oppo- nents are better at playing fast, better at making big plays, better at imposing their will. Once on the cutting edge, Oregon has been left behind. "I remember getting beat 66-14 and not being sure how it happened," said former Pac-12 coach Rick Neuheisel, now an an- alyst with CBS Sports. "But it was the speed in which they played, and it forced everybody to take notice ... "Now, many have ad- opted those styles. (Ore- gon) isn't the only place to go and play like that if you're a recruit. "All the advantages, from new uniforms and different helmets, have been copied so much by other programs that for Oregon to get back to that place, they almost need to reinvent themselves." First-class seasons are akin to a healthy body. In- stead of all the internal or- gans functioning properly, programs require success- ful recruiting and sound leadership, good health and effective coaching, effi- cient quarterback play and lucky bounces. Breakdowns in any area cause promising seasons to turn sour. Breakdowns in multiple areas — as Oregon has experienced this fall — can cause a collapse. CountStanfordcoachDa- vidShawasacutelyawareof the fragility of success. "Take us, last year," he said. "The season honestly hinged on whether or not (quarterback) Kevin Hogan was coming back. He won a lot of games for us. "You can talk about all the different things for suc- cess, but sometimes it's just one thing. You don't get that one thing, and who knows what happens." Stanford (6-3, 4-3) has already experienced slip- page from the height of its dominance. During a four-year run, from 2010-13, the Cardinal lost five conference games and played in four consec- utive major bowls. In the past three sea- sons, it has lost eight con- ference games and twice been eliminated from the division race by early No- vember. In between: A run to the Rose Bowl. That's hardly an Ore- gon-level decline, but it's a dip that stands, at this moment, in stark contrast with the twin ascents of the Washington schools. "Each team is completely new. Nothing carries over," Shaw said. "There are a lot of moving parts. "Every year, you have to say, 'OK, here's what we are and here's what we're good at.'"
