Theta Kite 4 Judy Bernet Evans '64 was presented with an engraved bowl from FCB at the open house, a small thank- you for the enormous amount of hours and talent she has donated to Alpha Chi. Mary Campbell '64, FCB president, wrote about Judy: "'Taking a look under the hood' is an expression we all know in the context of learning what we can't otherwise see in our cars. We know if we look, we might or might not understand what we see, but at least under the hood is a singular place. Suppose instead that someone asked you to look under the floor, above the ceilings, and between the walls, coupled with the caveat that there were no access openings before decisions were made. This architectural knowledge was but one of the talents given so freely by our sister Judith Bernet Evans '64 throughout her leadership for the renovation of the first floor of the chapter house. Choosing an outside architect, a construction manager, and a designer (Judy is both an architect and a designer but could not be hired to do this work while serving on FCB) were the opening tasks, while in parallel developing a budget for each aspect of the project. While the roles of these professionals were essential, none were equipped to execute without guidance, direction, and, sometimes, redirection as well as the assistance of someone with intimate knowledge of the house. Many of our sisters might feel comfortable selecting a color or a fabric, but what about viewing the colors under daylight (on both sunny and cloudy days), daylight plus incandescent lighting, twilight, and evening, and what about so wanting the perfect yellow that only a custom mixing of commercially available colors would suffice? All of the above was achieved with grace, tireless effort, and stunning results. Please join us in a rousing 'ring out three cheers for Judy,' without whom we simply would not have the on-time, on-budget, made to last, beautiful outcome which we all can enjoy today and for years to come." Tess Chamberlain '12, who graduated a year ago, was wistful after seeing the beautiful renovation. She said, "I graduated too early." Bonnie Rabe Vinovich '59 and husband Bill e-mailed that they enjoyed being able to visit at the Alpha Chi Chapter. Nancy Duff Morton '58 and her husband, George, were delighted to see the chandelier that pledge sister Sheryl Fredendall '58 had crafted. She took photos of it to send to her pledge class. Thetas gathered for a photo by the fireplace, where a specially made Kappa Alpha Theta crest now hangs. Judy Bernet Evans '64 found a wonderful artist to create the crest. It was dedicated on Homecoming weekend. Members of the pledge class of 2010 returned for Homecoming to see the renovations, and many of them had participated in the planning stages. Left to right, back row, are Melissa Lipscomb '10, Whitney Anthony '10, Rachel Booze '10, Haley Morris '10, Katie Lochry German '10; front row, Becca Price '10, Casey Ross '10, Amanda Saykes '10, and Caroline Haywood '10.
