The ZeTA Phi PAge 2 were so strong that after David graduated from law school and while serving in the military, he took it upon himself to write a series of letters, "Beta Briefs," so he and his brothers could keep in touch. The depth of these connections is evident to David, especially when he reflects on the strength of Zeta Phi's alumni involvement. David has served the chapter as an alumnus, as a chapter advisor for more than a decade, and as chairman of Zeta Phi's Centennial Reunion Celebration in 1990. The event was so well attended that it was the largest "sit down" dinner in the history of Columbia at the time. While the new chapter house is certainly a great source of pride, David believes the strength of chapter is intangible as it is always connected to the mutual respect, warm regard, and affection that alumni hold for each other. "It is impossible to calculate what my four years at 520 College Avenue meant to me then, during these intervening years, and currently," David said. Reflecting on the alumni support he received as an undergraduate, David remembered one advisor in particular. "We had great respect for Dr. Hugh E. Stephenson Jr. '43, who was our mentor and role model with regard to the fraternity. His support was constant and meaningful to all of us." David graduated with a bachelor's degree in history and then completed his juris doctor at the University of Missouri. He still lives in Columbia, where he has a law practice focused on all kinds of matters except criminal law, because his son, Daniel Knight '89, is the prosecuting attorney of Boone County. He remains in close touch with many of his fraternity brothers, always doing what he can to look after them, and offers help when the need arises. Over the past several months, the chapter was cited for two incidences where an underage student was served alcohol on our premises. As a result, Zeta Phi has been placed on disciplinary probation for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year. A group of alumni are already working with the chapter to overcome this challenging period of probation and to insure there are no further infractions. It will take hard work, a refocus on what it means to be a Beta Theta Pi, and discipline, but we are confident our undergraduate brothers will be able to move forward and return to a path dedicated to developing themselves as men of principle. T he chapter's sister organization, the Zeta Phi Society Foundation, held its annual golf outing at the University's A.L. Gustin Golf Course on September 16. Nearly 100 brothers participated and the event finished just as a rainstorm arrived in Columbia. The participants had a great time and it was a perfect opportunity to see brothers of all eras. The annual golf tournament, now in its 25th year, has raised substantial funds over the years to provide scholarships for deserving chapter members. Following the golf tournament, the society hosted a reception at the chapter house honoring Dave Spence '80 as the newest member on the Wall of Fame. The wall was started many years ago to honor Zeta Phi alumni who have been successful in their professional endeavors and contributed their time to Zeta Phi and the university. Dave has been a successful businessman in St. Louis and was the Republican candidate for governor in 2012. He has also been a faithful servant of Zeta Phi over the years, and was the general chairman of the new building campaign five years ago. President of the Zeta Phi Society Bob Selsor '82 and society board member Jim Rhea '80 represented the society in the award presentation to Dave before a crowd of more than 100 well-wishers in the chapter's dining hall.
