Dr.ShirleyEngebretsen SanFranciscoGolden Gate Park was one of my favorite places to visit as a child. I loved the mystery of the redwood trees next to the Rose Garden, and the beautiful orchids grow- ing in the planetarium. The most mystical place to visit was the Japanese Tea Garden. The willowy shapes of the trees, the pink spring blossoms that gave an element of sur- prise, and the gold and or- ange fish that swam com- fortably between ponds all fascinated me. It was the gigantic round red bridge with tiny steep stairs that drew my sisters, brother and me. If you were brave enough to climb to the top, you could see the entire tea gar- den in one panoramic view of beauty. Even as a child, I felt the peace of the gar- den. It called me to breathe deeply and feel the joy of that magnificent calm. Of course as a child, that mo- ment flew by so quickly that I doubt my parents caught a glimpse of the ef- fect the garden had on my spirit. Yet today, more than 45 years later, the mem- ory elicits the familiar re- sponse. I recently went back to the same Japa- nese Tea Garden. It had not changed, except that it seemed to have shrunk when compared to my 10-year-old's memory of it. The garden may not have changed but I did. I am 60+ years old. I have Par- kinson's disease and can no longer climb the red bridge. Like most people, my life has had very difficult twists and turns. My insights were lacking. Consequently the decisions I made were not always the best, and the outcomes have at times been devastating. How can I experience that kind of peace that swept over my spirit as a child? As much as I would love it, I cannot live in the Japanese Tea garden. If I did it would not take long for its charms to become tainted with pulling weeds and taking out the garbage. Peace must come from somewhere else. Some- where beyond my making perfect choices, somewhere out of reach of other peo- ple's decisions, and some- where that is safe. That place only exists in God's world, a world where he says that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to his pur- pose (Romans 8:28). It is a place where God keeps me in perfect peace because my mind is stayed on him and I trust in him (Isaiah 26:3); a place where I can deal with my problems be- cause I know God is with me (Matthew 26: 20, Ro- mans 8:31-38, John 14:23- 24). Wouldn't it be great if we could pray away our humanity? If we knew that praying for a set amount of time about the specific problem would guaran- tee that we would make the right decision? Unfor- tunately, this is not a real- ity. Our decisions are influ- enced by our culture, our preconceived ideas, and our knowledge at any given time. Prayer and reading the Bible often have a way of correcting our thinking. However, some things can only be learned through our mistakes. When we learn that de- spite our desire to please God, hours of intercessory prayer, and reading the Bi- ble still resulted in a wrong decision, we can become discouraged. Our faith feels weakened. Satan wants us to feel like we were fools, and uses these downtimes as a perfect time to attack our faith. When our faith is grounded solid in the word of God and his promises, we know beyond doubt that God will use even our mis- takes to build character in us and bring glory to him- self. No wonder the Scrip- ture says in Psalm 119:165, "Great peace have they who love thy law; nothing shall make them stumble." Dr.ShirleyEngebretsenis a long time contributor to God Talk.
