Kennedy wrote this in the court fi nding that struck down the Stolen Valor Act. The act, which makes criminal the claiming of military medals and service, was signed into law by President George Bush in 2005. Those found guilty of violating the law can face up to a year imprisonment. The court noted that while lying about military service is contemptible, it is protected by the First Amendment. I think the court is wrong. Over the years, the court has dealt with the issue of free speech a lot. They have had to examine it from the perspective of what is pornography and what is freedom of expression. What is free speech and what crosses the line and becomes traitorous? Is burning an American fl ag free speech? All of these topics have been hot buttons for the court, and the court's ruling over time has tended to alienate one side or the other. The same can be said of this latest ruling. Veterans groups are up in arms over the ruling, vowing to continue to seek out and push into the light those who would lie about their medals and their service. And they should. Military service is not for everyone. But it is an honorable calling. For those of us in Fayetteville, who are surrounded by heroes, we might become immune to the idea. But there really are not that many people who are willing to run into a stream of bullets to protect something as precious as freedom. So those who can, and do, should be honored. Their memory of their acts of bravery Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Thursday July 19 Friday July 20 Saturday July 21 should not be belittled by those who have either never served or who have never run into that stream of bullets. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that if a group of old men, sitting around drinking their morning coffee start one-upping each other with their war stories that someone should rush in, fact check their stories and throw them in jail. Free Wheelin' Feelin' ....................... 22 Horoscopes/Advice Goddess ......... 23 Classifieds ........................................ 24 Games .............................................. 26 What I am saying, is that if someone is using their military service or heroics in battle for gain, such as to get a job or I don't know, run for public offi ce, then their lies are not protected by the First Amendment because they are committing fraud. We've just seen this in Arkansas. A young man by the name of Ken Aden was running for Congress, and he had a pretty good chance of winning. He was touting his service as a Green Beret as one of the reasons why he should be elected. Small problem — Aden was never a Green Beret. But the people of Arkansas looked upon him as someone who had elite training, who was a decision maker, a warrior/ diplomat. He was none of those things. Much like the person who yells Veterans groups are up in arms over the ruling, vowing to continue to seek out and push into the light those who would lie about their medals and their service. A group of veterans outed Aden, and upon closer scrutiny it was found that much of what Aden put out about himself was untrue. He had sold the people of Arkansas a bill of goods and wrapped it in his service to country.tected speech? I don't think so.
