SwampDogs Make a Difference in the Community by TYLER OLSSON As the Fayetteville SwampDogs enter the dog days of summer, the team has continued to flourish and find success both on and off the field. In Perfect Game USA's most recent rankings, the SwampDogs were once again included in the top 30 summer collegiate teams in the nation. Fayetteville has been near the top of the overall league standings for the majority of the season, and has continued to remain involved in the local community. The team recently held its annual bowl- ing tournament to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Proceeds from the breakfast will once again benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, as the event gets underway at 8 a.m. Overlorde: Still Rocking On July 21, after a 23-year hiatus, the original Fayetteville-native me- dieval metal band Overlorde SR will resurface to reclaim their throne of rock. The returning line up features nearly all the original members; Steven V. Sosa Jr on Vocals; Wildman George Koerber on guitar; Craig Dunham on guitar; Gary Fisher on bass; with the addition of new drummer Zip. This will be the band's first show in Fayetteville since 1989. To make the occasion even more special Overlorde SR will release a brand new CD at this show for all their fans to get their hands on so they can catch up with the band. The new album is called Medieval Metal Too and features eight remastered tracks from their demos and compilation releases. Overlorde SR was formed in Fayetteville back in 1980, a time when southern rock ruled the re- gion. Overlorde SR had its own taste and steered clear of the fads to bring its own brand of new wave British metal to the Carolinas. They did so by staying true to their sound, and success fol- lowed. Overlorde SR was signed to Metal Blade Records in 1986, a record label that has been home to bands like Metallica and Gwar. This made them the first nationally signed metal band from the area. They were also the first local band to be played on Q 98 and the first metal band to play Fayetteville's Sunday on the Square, which later became the Dogwood Festival. Though originally signed under the name OverLorde the band later added SR (still rockin) to the end of its name to distinguish itself from another band from New Jersey named Overlord. The New Jersey band later trademarked the name. by RICKY SOETHOUT Unfortunately, the band came to a sudden stop in 1989. The label want- ed them to move to California so they could push Overlorde SR into bigger markets. Not all the members were able to make the move and ultimately Wildman George went out west to pursue his musical career. Overlorde SR stood dormant for a time, but its music and presence did not. While on hiatus, members and friends of Overlorde SR heard the band being played all over the world. Their songs were still played on the radio, covered by thrash bands they influenced and even being in techno house remixes at dance clubs in Germany. Overlorde SR decided to reunite recently once all the members were back in North Carolina. They are already working on a new album slated for release later this year. The new album will fea- ture all new material by the group. After the album drops, the band plans to finally tour Europe, one of the goals they had in their past incarnation.
