7 Congratulations to our 2016-17 Scholarship Recipients T he Beta Sigma Endowed Scholarship, in the amount of $1,250, was awarded to Lauren Markovich '14. Many thanks to the alumnae who endowed this scholarship last year and doubled the amount. Lauren is from Whiting, IN, and is majoring in chemical engineering. She chose Purdue because it felt like home and had a prestigious engineering program. Her career goals include finding a job that creates new pharmaceutical drugs improving the lives of others. Lauren studied abroad in Melbourne, Australia, during the spring 2016 semester and is a study abroad ambassador and research assistant. "Sigma Kappa means finding friends that stay up with you until 3 a.m. doing homework. It's looking back on the memories that we've shared together, knowing that the future holds times that will be even better. Sigma Kappa has helped me find my absolute best friends and I will always be thankful for the lifelong relationships that I will have after college," Lauren said. T he Barbera Owen Thomas Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was awarded to Alexis Fetters '15. Many thanks to Anne Thomas Simone '57 for sponsoring this scholarship. Alexis is from the small town of Plymouth, IN, and is a sophomore majoring in psychology with a minor in law and society. After graduating from Purdue, she plans to attend graduate school with the goal of earning a Ph.D. in clinical or industrial organizational psychology. Her campus activities include being a health and human sciences ambassador and the student leadership committee for the division of recreational sports. Ever since she can remember, Alexis has always wanted to attend Purdue and fell in love with the big campus when she came for a visit. "As a Sigma Kappa legacy, I feel my mom, Tameria Fetters, Gamma Eta, and I share another type of bond as sisters. As an only child, gaining 100- plus sisters was an amazing feeling and I cherish all of them," Alexis said. T he first-ever Elaine Kull Liley Scholarship, in the amount of $500, was awarded to Ally Green '13. Thank you to Becky Liley-Wagner '85 and Mary Kull Hopkins '48 for sponsoring this scholarship. Ally is from Goshen, NY, and is majoring in nursing with minors in human development and family science and psychology. She hopes to move back to New York City and work in a hospital. She is interested in either OB or pediatrics as her specialty and hopes to eventually become a nurse practitioner. Last winter break, Ally went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. It was an amazing experience that taught her about herself and the healthcare field. She chose Purdue because the nursing program is well-respected and when she visited the campus, she instantly fell in love. "Coming from out of state, I knew absolutely no one here. Sigma Kappa has given me my best friends and a home away from home. Being a member has allowed me to come out of my shell and grow as a person. I have held two leadership positions, which have helped me become more responsible and reliable. Sigma Kappa has given me more than I ever could have imagined, and I am extremely grateful," Ally said. We applaud Lauren, Alexis, and Ally for their leadership, scholarship, and service to others! These collegiate sisters truly exemplify what it means to "Live With Heart."
