DTD Preserving Our Present. Building for the Future. e Shield Delta Tau Delta • Beta Alpha Chapter Alumni Newsletter • Fall 2016 T his fall marks an exciting milestone for Beta Alpha of Delta Tau Delta: the new wing of our Shelter is complete. This new wing houses 12 upperclassmen Brothers in upgraded suite-style rooms, allows for increased public space for a new chapter room to accommodate the large size of the chapter, includes a state-of-the-art fitness room, houses a fully functional conference room that will support our Brothers in their career aspirations, and increases the live-in capacity from 88 to 100. Altogether, these changes allow Beta Alpha to provide our Brothers with the best fraternal housing experience possible and increase retention. While there is much to celebrate with the new wing of our Beta Alpha Shelter coming to life, we must not forget about one of the most important components of our project: fundraising. In order to pay down our bank loan as quickly as possible and avoid leaving a burden of debt upon our undergraduate members, we must achieve our fundraising goal of $1.25 million. With over $400,000 needed in new donations to reach our goal, there are still opportunities for each and every Brother to support our project. Throughout construction of the new wing, additional expenses have come up. More renovations and upgrades to the existing structure were required than expected and IU mandated several design changes to various aspects that also increased costs. Although still on solid financial ground, we would like to pay off the new loan in less than 15 years. We cannot do that without your support. With the increased construction expenses and long-term goal in mind, we have set a new, short-term goal—$1 million raised by the end of 2016. Brothers, I'm confident we can accomplish this goal. Increasing our overall participation percentage is imperative to reaching this new goal. Currently at 5% (IU's fraternal giving average for similar projects is ~20%), we must increase our participation to 15% by adding 115 Brothers to our donor list. Are you going to be one of those 115 Brothers? How can you Help? • If you have not yet given, thoughtfully consider what gift is right for you at this time. • If you have already given, consider adding another year to your pledge or give another one-time gift. Reach out to Brothers not listed on the donor list and ask them to give. There are a lot of factors that will decide whether or not we will be able to meet our short-term goal and raise the $227,679 needed to reach $1 million. The one fundamental factor we can control is how hard we work to get every pledge we possibly can. Simply put, we have a goal that we must meet. To make a gift, please fill out the enclosed pledge form and return it today. Thank you to the 40-plus alumni who visited the house, had brunch, and gave great feedback on the project at this year's Homecoming. Save the date for Little 5, April 2, 2017. The seniors and juniors living in the apartment-style rooms are thrilled to be the first ones to live in it. The addition of the weight room will go to great use in order to promote healthy lifestyles. This will also be a great asset to us in recruitment, for we will be the only chapter on campus that has a full weight room, elevator, and balconies overlooking our courtyard. We would like to thank all the donors who made this possible for us. We are truly blessed to be living in the third-largest fraternity in the nation." – Josh piper '17
