Bill@upandcomingweekly.com. PUBLISHER'S PEN As I downloaded eight pages of Cumberland County political want-to-bes from my computer, I scratched my head and wondered "What are some of these people thinking?" Now, I do not want to diminish the Constitutional right that every American has to participate in the political and electoral process but, come on now, they should have a plan, agenda or at least some passion(that deep burning feeling in the pit of one's stomach), conviction, ideas and a strong political platform would also be encouraging. Well, as I look over this list of nearly four dozen candidates the why becomes "curiouser and curiouser" than the who. The political battlefi eld of the May primary seems to be overly weighted with political unknowns and perennial losers. Usually, a political candidate is a high-profi le activist who is energized, highly motivated and concerned about the local community and state in which they live. Most serve their local governments in some capacity or at least monitor it and weigh in on important issues affecting the daily lives of citizens and possibly affecting the laws of the state — not so much here. It is very disappointing and, somewhat scary, to think that people are running for offi ce who when asked, cannot articulate why they are running and what they would do if they win. Very scary. Well, all I can say for sure is that we will get what we deserve. And, so far we have. Fayetteville, Cumberland County and North Carolina politics are a refl ection of what we see going on in Washington today. Recently, more than a dozen Republican and Democratic elected offi cials have chosen to give up their seats and leave Congress. And, they are not going quietly. They are being very vocal in their disappointment of the way our government is currently operating, stating for the most part that it is "broken" and elected offi cials are not representing the American people but their own "self interest." Basically, those leaving are just sick and tired of being found "guilty through association" as honesty, integrity, ethics, morality and character are forced to take a backseat to corporate payoffs, sex scandals, sweetheart deals, lobbyists' payoffs and special interests. Oops! Am I on a soapbox? Sorry, but this trickle down effect to North Carolina communities cannot be escaped and our community deserves better. That being said, here is my personal 2010 May Primary Primer: Forget about party affi liation. Vote for the candidates who are knowledgeable, visible, out spoken, willing to work and cooperate with others, individually and collectively, for the betterment of all Fayetteville, Cumberland County and North Carolina residents. Above all, they need to be honest and passionate about this community. It's that easy. Thank you for reading Up & Coming Weekly. 24 24 7 / Forecast available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
