The Red Ribbon Week theme adopted by Tehama County, "Fos- ter a Drug Free Healthy Lifestyle. Be Drug Free," highlights the hope that lies in the hard work and de- termination of the community to create a drug free environment. The week continues through to Monday. Tehama County Young Marines Walter Williams, Miranda Kain, Trevor Kain, Gavin Wilkinson and Vance Crane led the event by pre- senting the colors for the pledge of allegiance. Miranda Kain then spoke about how the Red Ribbon Week all began. The prevention week began in honor and remembrance of En- rique "Kiki" Camarena, an under- coveragentfromtheDrugEnforce- ment Administration who was ab- ducted in 1985. At this time he was very close to exposing a multi-mil- lion dollar drug pipeline to the United States. He was later mur- dered while undercover. Camarenadeathopenedtheeyes of many Americans to the dangers of drugs and the international scope of the drug trade, Miranda Kain said. The guest speaker of the eve- ningwasAdamZuccato,aTehama County Health Services Agency Drug and Alcohol counselor. He shared his story with the audience abouthisstrugglesandexperiences with drugs and how he was able to overcome the addiction. After a snow boarding accident Zuccatohadbeenprescribedapain pill called Norco. He ended up tak- ingafour-monthsupplyinamonth andahalf,whichbeganhisjourney through drug addiction. Zuccato moved on to stronger drugs and eventually noticed he was getting too deep into the life- style of a drug addict. He said he knew he needed a change. After two years of going in and out of rehabilitation facilities Zuccato was able to better him- self and now hopes he can do the same for others through his work. Zuccato has been free from drugs and alcohol for six years. The National Marine Fisher- ies Service in a document made public Friday said 23 hatchery programs could produce fish ge- netically similar to their wild but struggling cousins and should have the option of receiving fed- eral protections. The agency recently com- pleted a five-year review required for listed species and plans no changes to the threatened or en- dangered status for the salmon and steelhead populations found in California, Oregon, Washing- ton and Idaho. The project is aimed at extend- ing the life of two bridges in Red Bluff, the Brickyard Creek Bridge and Reeds Creek Bridge. Plans for the project are to re- pair the bridges by applying a concrete crack sealant, replac- ing joint seals and joint seal as- semblies, constructing approach slabs and repainting metal sup- port beams. As part of the 13 bridges sched- uled for maintenance in Tehama County's Bridge Preventative Maintenance Program Project, two of the bridges are located in Red Bluff and are on Jackson Street, said Robin Kampmann, in- terim city engineer. "Tehama County has been working on a permanent phar- maceutical drug take back loca- tion for five years," said Tehama County Drug and Alcohol Coun- selor John Gehrung, who worked on the project. "Now, we have suc- cessfully installed one in the Te- hama County Sheriff's Depart- ment lobby and we're working toward putting one in at the Corn- ing Police Department. It's an op- portunity for residents to partic- ipate in the disposal of pharma- ceutical and over the counter medication that's out of date." One of the goals of the program is to decrease the number of over- doses, of which there have been 16 in the last three months, Gehrung said. Tehama County is 14th in the state for the number of prescrip- tions and for every 1,000 residents there are 1,326 prescriptions that have been prescribed.
