ByAlisonNoon TheAssociatedPress SACRAMENTO Political donors have spent a record $450 million on 17 statewide November bal- lot initiatives in California, beat- ing the state's own record for the most spent on propositions ap- pearing on state ballots in a sin- gle year, campaign reports filed Thursday show. The fundraising has soared at least $12 million past California's previous record, when $438 mil- lion was spent on the campaigns for and against 21 measures on 2008 ballots. With inflation, fun- draising in 2008 would be worth at least $490 million today. No other state has come close to those amounts. Mervin Lyle James, 56, of Cot- tonwood and Kristy Marie Singer 31, of Las Vegas were arrested and booked into Tehama County Jail on the charge of the cultivation of marijuana with bail set at $10,000 each. The owner of the operation was identified but was not at the residence at the time of the ser- vice of the warrant. Sheriff investigators, along with agents from the Tehama Interagency Drug Enforcement Task Force, served a search war- rant on the residence and the property surrounding it allowing law enforcement to search for an illegal marijuana growing oper- ation on the property, according to a press release issued Thurs- day by the Tehama County Sher- iff's Department. Upon arriving to the property, investigators encountered James in the middle of a commercial marijuana garden and Singer in a building on the property pro- cessing marijuana for packaging and sales. Both were taken into custody without incident. According to the release a sec- ond man was observed fleeing the property. He was later identified and his arrest is anticipated. Large outdoor commercial marijuana growing operations were found on the property along with several outbuildings where the processing and packaging fa- cility were located. An addition building was set up as a green- house and had immature grow- ing marijuana plants. Another was set up as a drying room for the harvested marijuana plants. Also on the property were sev- eral firearms that included as- sault rifles, handguns and a cache of ammunition, according to the release. An assault rifle silencer device, bullet proof vests and a ballistic helmet, similar to those worn by the military or law en- forcement, were also found on the property. The operation was determined to be a full scale commercial COTTONWOOD Twoarrestedingrowoperation By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Tehama County took to the big screen Wednes- day when the Tehama County Economic Development series of marketing videos, available on the county website, made a de- but at the State Theatre. Tehama County Supervisor Bob Williams served as master of ceremonies for the event. "Welcome everyone and thank you all for attending," Williams said. "It's nice to see so many people turn out for to- night's event because tonight is about celebrating and looking forward to the future of the Te- hama County Economic Devel- opment Program." The movies are a result of an effort that started about a year and half ago with visits to Roseville and Patterson to learn what their communities were doing in regards to eco- nomic development as a way to figure out how to move Te- hama County forward in the ar- eas of economic development, job creation and job retention, Williams said. While Tehama County was involved in other projects, there was a realization that more needed to be done to bring jobs to the area.
