Compassion seems to have been put on the back burner during the po- litical season. I'd love to be able to write about how our society has be- come more compassionate to each other. But watch the news, and we see the lack of respect, compassion and dignity for our fellow human beings being thrown at us daily. Remember when your mother taught you to be kind? To treat oth- ers as you would like to be treated? Remember the politeness of respect- ing your elders? Remember when we spoke quietly in the library out of respect for others? Remember when 6 www.DesertMessenger.com October 19, 2016 DESERT MESSENGER Quartzsite's FREE Community Paper Proud to be a Quartzsite Licensed Business 928-916-4235 O T - E T! Nov. 3 Residents of the Town of Quartzsite are invited to attend the next meeting of Neighborhood Watch at 6:00 PM, on THURSDAY, NOV. 32016, at the Quartzsite Community Center. Chief William Ponce said he looks forward to working with the resi- dents to create a safer community. Launched in 1972, Neighbor- hood Watch counts on citizens to organize themselves and work with law enforcement to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities, while demonstrating their pres- ence at all times of day and night. Sponsored by the National Sher- iffs' Association (NSA), the Nation- al Crime Prevention Council says, "Neighborhood watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the coun- try, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer." Provided by Elmer London, Quartzsite and Desert Messenger Song writers once had a knack for writing music - that fit a theme, to follow a story line. Since I have plenty of time I have become a fan of METV, a channel devoted to re-runs. Where music fits tranquility, grief, fear, and crashing tragedy. Then at last happy success. privacy was respected? Remember when we honored relationships with friends, instead of threatening them on social media? I remember sitting quietly and listen to stories of my grandparents. But now, kids can't put down their phones to just be in the moment. When men say, "this might sound like Trump, but.." and then go ahead and make self righteous statements, we have not "come a long way, baby!" We've moved from a compassion- ate society to one of fear, anger and mistrust. Women's issues are not just for women. These are our issues; about how to be better human beings. What is our political "drama" teach- ing young men about how to treat young women? Women across the world have had painful past memo- ries "triggered" by recent events. When salt is thrown on open wounds, it just plain hurts. We should not be surprised that counseling hotlines were overwhelmed with calls this past week from women who needed to hear compassion, even from a to- tal stranger. Let us remember the simple golden rule; Treat each other how you want to be treated and the world will be a better place for every- one~ We will get through this and be a stronger nation. So, let's start right here, right now in our community! Respect starts at home! Just do it! FREE CLASSIFIEDS Desert Messenger offers FREE Classified Ads!
