ByChipThompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter RED BLUFF When the Los Mo- linos Bulldogs hosted the Mercy Warriors in 2015, they were beaten 54-20, thanks to Al House posting 372 all-purpose yards and scoring six touchdowns. But House graduated, along with several other standout se- niors at Mercy, and this season the Bulldogs sit comfortably in second place in the South 8-Man stand- ings while the Warriors are fifth. The Bulldogs will come to Red Bluff on Saturday looking for re- venge, but they'll have to do it without their No. 1 playmaker Alex Russell, who was ejected during last week's loss to Princ- eton and must sit out this week according to league rules. The Bulldogs have proven they can win without Russell, though, shutting out the Westwood Lum- berjacks 20-0 in week 5 on the road behind the arm and legs of freshman Hunter Landingham, who threw for 140 yards and a touchdown and ran for 143 and a touchdown. Other Bulldogs to watch will be Henry McHale, who put up 153 yards against Westwood, and Kyle Wood, who hauled in three passes for 74 yards. The Warriors will look for a big game from quarterback Kavin McClellan, who has 217 passing yards and two touchdowns and 928 rushing yards and 11 touch- downs on the season. By comparison, Landingham has just 368 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the season — in large part due to Russell's lead role as the Bulldogs' ball carrier. Another key will be the War- riors' ability to capitalize on er- rors — Landingham threw six interceptions against the Lum- berjacks. McClellan has just two picks for the season. Pressuring Landingham will be Dartagnan Kingwell, who leads the Warriors with eight sacks, and Noe Rodriguez, who has 61 tackles on the season. Landingham leads the Bull- dogs with 58 tackles followed by Dawson Spencer with 43. On paper the teams are re- markably similar, with the Bull- dogs averaging 23 points per game and the Warriors 24, the Bulldogs rushing for 252 yards per game and the Warriors 296 and the Bulldogs passing for 48 yards and the Warriors 46. The scale tips toward the Bulldogs in points allowed, with 18 compared to the Warriors at 24. Both teams will be looking to make a statement after suffering big losses last week — the Bull- dogs 72-38 to Princeton and the Warriors 72-29 to Greenville. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Satur- day at Sacred Heart Parish School, 2255 Monroe St. in Red Bluff. Liset Castillo was named player of the game for the Bull- dogs, with eight kills, 10 aces, 10 digs and an assist. "Liset is a very steady and humble player," said coach Chas Konopka. "Tonight she really shined behind the service line. She served extremely well, lead- ing the Lady Bulldogs with 10 aces and was everywhere in the back row with 10 digs. We call that a double-double in volley- ball too." Rachel Rogers had 12 kills, three aces, two blocks and three digs; Henna Acevedo had five kills, four aces, four digs and two assists; Heather Rodri- guez had a kill, two aces, three digs and 15 assists; Kendall Wil- liams had three aces, four digs and six assists; Genesis Acev- edo had three kills and a block; Sugey Cota had five digs and Lizzy Belcher had four. Castillo's play is earning her national recognition. "Liset is also being recog- nized as top Senior in the Na- tion by being on the Under Ar- mour National Watch List," Ko- nopka said. The Bulldogs (23-8 overall, 6-0 league) are scheduled to host the Mercy Warriors (7-16 overall, 1-5 league) at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. Jerry McDonald Bay Area News Group As the Colin Kaepernick re- boot begins Sunday, we'll begin to learn if there's enough hard- ware (a 49ers supporting cast) to allow the new software in- stalled by coach Chip Kelly to be effective. The consensus from the out- side? Starting Kaepernick over Blaine Gabbert against the Buf- falo Bills was the right move. On the other hand, even with Kaepernick's abundant physical gifts, instant success with the 49ers as currently constructed is unlikely. It's an experiment that, Kae- pernick's health permitting, could play out over the remain- der of the season, and is sure to have some rough patches. Kelly's system could coax some of the run-pass brilliance that helped the 49ers advance to an NFC title game following the 2011 season and the Super Bowl the following year. But that was a long time ago, back when Robert Griffin III was rookie of the year and was considered along with Kaeper- nick to be the future of the NFL as a dual-threat quarterback. And when the 49ers had a lot more talent than they do now. "The problem is he hasn't played in a while, and when he has played the production and consistency hasn't been there," former Raiders quarterback and CBS analyst Rich Gannon said. "I don't know how good they are around him. I think they've got NFL Kaepernick 2.0: Can he rejuvenate the 49ers? Sunday: San Francisco 49ers at Buffalo Bills, 10a.m., TV on FOX. TUNEIN Sunday: Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders, 1:05p.m., TV on CBS. TUNEIN By Jerry McDonald Bay Area News Group ALAMEDA The Oakland Raid- ers came to work Friday look- ing down on the rest of the di- vision, which is rarified air for a franchise which hasn't had a win- ning season since 2002. When the San Diego Char- gers beat the Denver Broncos on Thursday night, it left the Raiders at 4-1 as the lone one-loss team in the AFC West. "Gotta keep it that way," defen- sive end Khalil Mack said after practice. If the Raiders beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at the Col- iseum, it would be their best start since opening 6-1 in 2001, the sec- ond of their three consecutive di- vision championships. The Raiders were also 4-1 in 2002, the year they won the AFC title, but fell to 4-4 before win- ning seven of the last eight. Raiders coach Jack Del Rio wasn't about to look too far ahead, not with the Chiefs com- ing into town with every inten- tion of raining on the idea of a Raiders parade. "It's all about what we do Sun- day against the Chiefs, a division rival," Del Rio said. "If you want to win your division you have to win in your division, so we're looking forward to the opportu- nity." Rookie running back DeAndre Washington has obviously been well-schooled, tackling the first- place question like a veteran. "In this league, man, it's a long season, you can't get caught look- ing ahead when you've got a good team coming in to your home," Washington said. "We have to protect our own home first and foremost and get this division win." Del Rio, looking as if he had walked out of a duck blind after practice, was happy to be practic- ing in the rain since the forecast calls for plenty of it Sunday. "Today was great because this is likely what it is Sunday, so we've got to prepare in it, which was outstanding for us," Del Rio said. The Raiders will be without Latavius Murray, a heavy-footed runner who broke an 80-yard touchdown run in a rainy win over the Chiefs at the Coliseum in 2014. Rookies Washington and Jalen Richard, who both said they had experience playing in the rain in college and high school, will have to pick up the slack, along with fullback Jamize Olawale. At Southern Mississippi, Rich- ard said he played in a rain storm so strong there was water up to his ankles.
