IdescribedinPart1how the Lord our God declared His name for my city — and by extension Northern California re- gion and all of California — was Abun- dant Springs. He invented human speech; it should not shock the I write things like, "He revealed…" The revelation continues to unfold in counterintuitive albeit pragmatic fashion. Several more years passed before the Lord re- vealed another dimension of His plan for revitalizing the state to that same new- comer with as little busi- ness acumen as he has lon- gevity in Redding. This reveal was that non-prof- its — oriented to vision and service before prod- uct — would lead the way to renaissance in Red- ding. During the reces- sion non-profits have flour- ished. The Good News Res- cue Mission, for example, has opened a new counsel- ing center, a new home for women clients, and a men- tal health program to take up the slack left by county budget cuts. They are find- ing jobs for graduates of their programs while set- ting standards of excellence across the board. In the same vein Bethel Church — through a blind holding company that suc- cessfully avoids church- state entanglement — has taken over management of the city's convention cen- ter after city government contemplated bankruptcy and secular sources failed to offer better plans than the church-based group. The fruit is spectacular; the center is profitable and pro- viding new jobs for the first time in years and the com- munity is cheering the new team on. In addition that church's burgeoning school of ministry and other pro- grams are drawing peo- ple and resources into Red- ding; they are an economic as well as a spiritual force to be reckoned with. These vision-based perspectives are rubbing off on secular visionaries as well. When city council hope- ful Julie Winter kicked off her campaign in early Spring her first guest speaker was co-founder Bruce Dean of the Black Bear Diner chain. The founding vision in 1994 was down-home food for travelers and vacationers to Mount Shasta. The plan was hard work and the faith to work harder still but the vision and the ser- vice it generated was al- ways paramount. In just over two decades they have expanded to nearly eighty locations in eight states from their headquarters in Redding, a phenome- nal track record for a res- taurant business in which most successes become fail- ures because they expand faster than they can keep up with their own success. But Dean was not present to talk of his own victories. He and Winter an- nounced the past twelve months have seen some fifty successful startup businesses in Redding alone. Each of them has the potential to move faster and farther than Dean's business. He and Winter speak of a new passion to place more and more lead- ers in all spheres with vi- sion for an Abundant Springs-type of city. None of this is magical. The Abundant Springs vi- sion-word was given twelve years ago. It has not moved quickly and Redding has known its share of hard times in this over managed and under prayed economy. But the word has unfolded with developing extrapola- tions beginning with God's promise of abundance that mirrors Jesus' declaration of abundant life in John 10. God telegraphed His insis- tence that authentic service supports His Kingdom on earth and so is the current ticket to success in His cre- ated world. More recently He demonstrates His favor on those concerns with a focus on vision leading the way to recovery. Two factors stand out in this toddling renais- sance. Every aspect begins with God-given vision be- fore product or ambition — for He is the one source of all vision, as opposed to agenda. And every aspect proceeds with hard work and an attitude that sees obstacles as challenging opportunities. God Him- self declares — in Zecha- riah 8:9-17 — that we must let our hands be strong if we would participate in His redemption. After hon- oring and addressing fac- tors one and two they re- turn to number one. Ev- ery time. This renaissance has a long way to go; God things always do. It is staffed by very human — read very flawed players — as God things always are. But He has shown His cards one- at-a-time from the begin- ning. Redding, and any community wanting to be all it can and ought to be, has a chance without pre- cedence to establish a cul- ture of repentance — un- derstood as re-focus on the Author and Redeemer of community — and sim- ply follow where He leads. He did come that we might have abundant life. This is the real vision and concept of Abundant Springs, wher- ever it might be. By the way, speaking of medical breakthroughs ear- lier, this approach has no side effects and it declines to re-invent what God has already created. The Apostle Paul wisely encouraged in scripture "to respect those who work hard among you... hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work." All congregations of Te- hama County are encour- aged to honor their pas- tors in a creative way, be it through gifts, cards, letters, delivered meals or a Sunday barbecue celebration after morning worship. For many pastors, the clock never stops at their house. With full days of tasks throughout the week, there also are the unex- pected calls to respond to crisis situations. Tehama County churches are urged to give back to their pastors, especially to those who have a second job. Take the opportunity to refresh the pastors and their families. TEHAMA COUNTY Churches urged to celebrate Pastor Appreciation Month The Associated Press LOS ANGELES Just as the Jewish holiday of Yom Kip- pur began Tuesday night, a federal judge lifted a tem- porary restraining order against a California syna- gogue performing a ritual where chickens are twirled in the air before they're slaughtered. Judge Andre Birotte Jr. had granted the order last week at the request of an animal rights group called United Poultry Concerns, and he scheduled a hearing for Thursday. Butthat would have meant Yom Kippur would be over by the time he ruled, so Birotte moved up the hearing to Tuesday. The ritual known as Ka- poros is typically performed in the run-up to Yom Kip- pur, which began Tuesday evening and ends Wednes- day evening. It was not clearwhetherChabadIrvine would perform it this year at all in spite of the decision. But its attorneys praised the lifting of the order as a victory nonetheless. "We are grateful to Judge Birotte for taking emer- gency action to ensure that the Jewish synagogue mem- bers' First Amendment rights were safeguarded during Yom Kippur," attor- ney Matthew Martens said in a statement. The order would have re- quired the synagogue to perform the ritual only at a slaughterhouse to abide by the law. Some from the Or- angeCountyJewishcommu- nity, not acting as Chabad Irvine, did just that at a slaughterhouse in Westmin- ster, California, on Monday night. The ceremony involves whirling a chicken above one's head while reciting a prayer. Practitioners believe the person's sins will be transferred to the chicken. The bird is then slaughtered in a kosher manner. Chickens used in the cere- mony were once given to the poor, but they are now gen- erally disposed of because of food-handling laws. The attorneys who brought this lawsuit and an- other that is proceeding in state court, say the tempo- rary setback doesn't mean they'll drop the federal suit. TheysayitisillegalinCal- iforniaandmostotherstates to intentionally kill an ani- mal as punishment for sins. "The fact that the tem- porary restraining order is lifted doesn't say anything about the merits of the case," attorney Bryan Pease told the Orange County Reg- ister. "The lawsuit will con- tinue,andthejudgewillcon- tinue to look at the legal is- sues." Pease and David Simon are working with United Poultry Concerns, a Vir- ginia-based animal rights group that says it promotes "the compassionate and re- spectfultreatmentofdomes- tic fowl."
