"The ref put the ball on the ground and it actu- ally shifted and he had to give it to the center to put on the ground. That's how much water it was sitting in. It's always fun to play in a rainy game." • Tackle Vadal Alexan- der, who started the last two games, will miss the Chiefs game with an ankle injury and Menelik Wat- son (calf) is also out. Austin Howard is the likely starter at right tackle, although Del Rio was keeping that information to himself. Listed as questionable to face the Chiefs are safety Nate Allen (quadriceps), guard Jon Feliciano (calf), special teams player Tai- wan Jones (knee), line- backer Malcolm Smith (groin), and tight end Clive Walford (knee). • Linebacker Perry Ri- ley Jr. is ready for exten- sive duty again after play- ing all but one snap just five days after signing with the Raiders, playing in place of Smith. "He wasn't at home watching soap operas," defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. said. "He was in his books, watching foot- ball." Riley said indeed he is not a fan of daytime tele- vision. "I'm not a soap opera fan," Riley said. "I was watching football on TV. I've been playing this game a long time, and you don't lose that in four weeks." • Including two wins as quarterback of the 49ers, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is 7-1 against the Raiders with 18 touch- down passes, three inter- ceptions and a 106.1 passer rating. The Chiefs were off last week after a big loss in Pittsburgh, and their coach, Andy Reid, is 15-2 coming off a bye including his time in Philadelphia. "Good time off; time well spent," Del Rio said of Re- id's success. "I think we all like to put together a plan to come out of our byes and play good football. He's done a good job of that." Raiders FROM PAGE 1 a ways to go." Gannon and former 49ers quarterback Steve Young believe Kelly's sys- tem can help in some ways, but can't cure what ails Kaepernick in terms deliv- ering the ball on time with touch and accuracy. "It's going to be hard," Young said in an interview with SI.com. "The things that I think Blaine strug- gled with, Colin struggles with as well." Potential success lies in the zone read system which can help the 49ers move the ball on the ground with Kaepernick's legs, mixing in pass routes and throws he can make with a reason- able degree of accuracy. Former NFL MVP Kurt Warner, who worked with Kaepernick going in to the 2015 season, expressed op- timism on the NFL Net- work. "We remember back to where Colin was last year, in more of a drop-back sys- tem, he struggled to read coverages and throw the ball," Warner said. "Now we're in a different situa- tion. Everybody felt when Chip Kelly came in, this was a perfect fit for what Colin does. "They're going to have the threat of the quarter- back to run, they're going to get him out on the edges, they're going to simplify the playbook." Eric Davis, a former 49ers cornerback and ra- dio analyst, said on the NFL Network that Kaepe- rnick will be an improve- ment but that expectations should be tempered. "I don't think he's go- ing to come out and just light it up," Davis said. "I don't expect him to have a Tom Brady day. But I think he's going to be better than Blaine Gabbert. I think he's a better quarterback than Blaine Gabbert and I think that this is a system that he can play in." Brian Billick, an NFL Network analyst who won a Super Bowl as coach of the Baltimore Ravens, said Kaepernick's past success counts for something even if it has been a few years since he was at the top of his game. "He's been there before, regressed a little bit after (Jim) Harbaugh left, but I think his skill set would fit beautifully into what Chip Kelly wants to do," Billick said. "If he's in good shape, if he's capable of flourish- ing in the NFL it would be in this type of offense." Billick said it will take upward of 500 passes — a figure Kaepernick can't hopetoreachwith11games remaining — to determine if he can make it back as a quality NFL starter. Tim Hasselbeck, an NFL quarterback for seven years and an ESPN analyst, warns on expecting too much too soon. "Before we start asking if he's back to the guy who was winning playoff games and being just a hair away from the Super Bowl, can he be in a situation where he can be the starter for 16 games?" Hasselbeck said. "Here's a guy that's been on the bench. He needs to prove he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL." While Kelly has said the system doesn't change whether the quarterback is Gabbert or Kaepernick, Gannon isn't sure that's the best approach. "You don't want to bang your head against a wall and say, 'This is my of- fense, this is what we do,'" Gannon said. "A good play- caller and a good system has the ability to adjust to the personnel. You'll want to adjust to what Kaeper- nick does well, what he's comfortable with, what he has a history with." Kaepernick's social ac- tivism, if anything, appears to have enhanced his sta- tus within the locker room. Davis said before Kae- pernick's stance on the na- tional anthem and racial justice, the quarterback was viewed by teammates as a "big-timer … he'd gone Hollywood." The Kaepernick who takes the field Sunday ap- pears to be much closer to his teammates. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 MARCIO JOSE SANCHEZ — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE San Francisco 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert, le , watches as Colin Kaepernick warms up before a game against the Arizona Cardinals in Santa Clara.
