DearMary:Thecop- per post tops on my deck are becoming tarnished. Do you know of a natural and cheap way that I can clean them with- out damag- ing the cop- per? I'm en- closing a photo, too. — Patti Dear Patti: I really like this beautiful treatment on your deck. Thanks for sending the photo — that's always a good idea, by the way. Yes, I do have a solu- tion, involving ordinary items from your pantry. It is cheap to make and easy to use, and it works great. Best of all, it contains no toxic chemicals. Coppercleaner • 6 tablespoons table salt • 6 tablespoons flour • White vinegar Make a paste of equal parts salt and flour with a few tablespoons of white vinegar. Apply the paste on the copper with a soft cloth, and rub gently to re- move tarnish. Rinse with water and dry. Dear Mary: I have in- herited a set of vintage aluminum canisters. Somewhere along the line, the canisters were washed in the dishwasher and came out so discolored they are no longer pretty. I have tried a couple of cleaning methods, but they did nothing to restore their beauty. Do you have any suggestions? — Ina Dear Ina: Most alumi- num is best washed by hand with dishwashing liq- uid to prevent a change in metal color and feel. When washed in a dish- washer, aluminum cook- ware and other items like these canisters can react and darken, due to mineral content in the water, chem- icals in the detergent or high heat from the dryer. In most cases, though, this change in appearance is not permanent. I am confident that you can remove the discolor- ation using such natural, ordinary items as lemon juice, vinegar or cream of tartar (depending on what you have handy), which you'll make into a paste by adding a bit of water. Apply with a soft cloth or sponge. Never use steel wool or any other type of abrasive applicator that could scratch the alumi- num. Rub gently, rinse with warm water, and buff dry with a clean, soft cloth. Any of these options should remove the discol- oration and provide fast, effective results without damaging the metal. Dear Mary: I'm hop- ing you have a recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent. Thanks in ad- vance. — Preston Dear Preston: Are you willing to experiment a bit? The following rec- ipe has been met with mixed reviews, due to (I believe) how hard the wa- ter is. Provided you do not have a home water-soft- ener system in place, give this a try. Mix together equal parts borax and baking soda. Store in a dry place in a container with a tight- fitting lid. To use, add 2 tablespoons to the deter- gent-holding area — mea- sure it, don't just dump it in. Instead of a commer- cial rinse aid, you can fill that reservoir with dis- tilled white vinegar. Again, do not use this homemade dishwasher de- tergent if you have a home water-softener system in place. The reaction be- tween the system and this detergent could perma- nently etch glassware. The Outstanding 4-H Sheep Project Member of the Year award was created in his memory and funded by his wife, Janice Knight, and members of the community. This award honors a Tehama County 4-H member for their outstanding sheep project. The emphasis is on sheep breeding, leadership and promoting the sheep industry. This year congratulations go to Laney Parker of Westside 4-H Club. As the recipient, Laney receives a $50cash award and an individual award. Her name will also be listed on a perpetual plaque displayed at the Tehama County 4-H Office. The selection committee found that Laney has shown growth in size and scope of her sheep project, shares sheep knowledge and skills with others being a 4-H Junior Leader and actively participates at countywide sheep events, activities and the Tehama District Fair. For more information on the 4-H Program in Tehama County or how you can donate to the Ron Knight Memorial Fund, call the Tehama County 4-H office at 527-3101. 4-H AWARDRECIPIENT By Jennifer Cooper SocialSecuritymanagerin Redding August 1 marked the 60th anniversary of the Social Se- curity Disability Insurance program, signed into law by President Dwight Eisen- hower in 1956. Originally, the program was limited to individuals who were age 50 or older. It also had a six- month waiting period, and there were no benefits pay- able to spouses or children. The disability pro- gram has undergone many changes to become the pro- gram it is today. Now, people who receive Social Security disability benefits can also receive Medicare coverage after 24 months, and their dependents may be eligible to receive benefits on their earnings records. There are also work incentives in place to help people with disabili- ties go back to work. As of June 2016, there are more than 10 million dis- abled workers and depen- dents receiving a portion of themorethan$11billionthat is sent each month in Social Securitydisabilitypayments. It can happen to any- one: studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 1-in-4 chance of becoming disabled before reaching their full retirement age. To meet the challenges of providing benefits to so many, the agency has evolved, using technology to operate more efficiently. Access to online appli- cations for disability ben- efits, reconsiderations, and hearings have given appli- cants more service options when applying for benefits. Our health IT initiative al- lows Social Security to ac- cess electronic medical re- cords, including those from the U.S. Department of De- fense, which reduces ad- ministrative costs, stream- lines operations, and speeds up service to veterans. Social Security is com- mitted to securing today and tomorrow for our mil- lions of disabled work- ers.
