SIMPSON UNIVERSITY Student leaders for 2016-2017 are recognized Thanks to a generous grant from Raley's and the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Class- room, students at Lincoln Street School have the op- portunity to learn about agriculture and nutrition. The grant allows teach- ers to purchase featured, seasonal, agricultural commodities for students to taste throughout the school year. During their weekly club, students got to taste a variety of fresh apples as well as enjoy applesauce made on-site. Kindergarten through fourth-grade students learned about observation skills by studying several different apple varieties. The fifth- through eighth- grade students learned all about food safety and how to prevent foodborne illnesses. Lincoln Street is a pub- lic Independent Study Charter School that fol- lows a home school model. On Fridays, students gather for a day of enrich- ing clubs where they work with grade level peers on a variety of subjects. For more informa- tion, visit www.lincoln- streetschool.org. Four students from Red Bluff Christian Homeschool Co-op participated Sept. 28 through Oct. 1 in the 2016 Shasta Forestry Challenge at Mountain Meadows Camp, east of Shingletown. A total of 84 high school students from 15 schools from northern and central California participated. The team tied for fifth place out of 21 teams. One of the highlights for the students was the oppor- tunity to assess the condi- tion of an even-aged forest managed by W.M. Beaty & Associates. After spend- ing a day on the Thatcher Ranch collecting data and interacting with natural re- source professionals, stu- dents weighed in on how to manage the 33-year-old pine plantations on the ranch over the next 10 years. Teams completed field training, followed by a field test, to assess their techni- cal forestry knowledge and data collecting skills. "Forestry Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for the students to work with professionals doing real world science," said teacher Debbie Deem. Participants included Rene Umali, Ethan Stultz, Daniel Deem, Audrey Um- ali and Robert Umali. REDDING Simpson University welcomes new students By Collin Binkley TheAssociatedPress DeVry University is dropping one of its mar- quee advertisement claims after the federal govern- ment found there was no evidence to support it. One of the nation's largest for-profit college chains, DeVry has long ad- vertised that 90 percent of its alumni since 1975 found employment in their fields of study within six months of graduation. The claim has been fea- tured in advertisements online, in magazines and over the radio since at least 2008. But in a settlement with the Department of Educa- tion announced on Thurs- day, the Illinois-based chain agreed to stop using the statistic. The depart- ment began investigating the claim last year and or- dered DeVry to prove it. Federal officials say the evidence that DeVry pro- vided ultimately fell short.
