F Fall 2016 House Corporation Looks for Assistance in Funding New Chiller Board Seeks More Local Alumnae Participation Fall greetings from your Theta Iota House Corporation. The school year is off to another great start for the women at 1834 Laramie as well as for the group of alumnae overseeing the care and maintenance of the Chapter House. The House Corporation consists of 10 members, most of whom have served from five to 10 years in this capacity. At this time, just two members live in Manhattan while most live in communities elsewhere around Kansas, including Herington, Council Grove, Topeka, Salina, and Kansas City. Thanks to electronic communication, our members who live in the Kansas City area are able to virtually meet with the local members when the commute is not workable. It has been a very valuable tool that allows us to share in discussion, planning, and visual sharing, especially when the topic includes a particular issue at the house that must be seen. Going forward, various methods of electronic "meetings" will surely continue to serve the House Corporation. However, it will never completely substitute the need for more local members. If you have an interest in helping with Theta Iota in this way while also getting to know other alumnae, please contact any of the members listed in this newsletter. We would welcome your presence, expertise, and input! Last spring brought the need for a new chiller to adequately cool the Chapter House, as well as a request for assistance in purchasing it at a cost of $78,000. A generous $6,000 grant from the Tri Delta National Housing Corporation and $7,000 from long- term savings left a need for a loan of $65,000, which was acquired locally. Additionally, our appeal was answered by many alumnae who made contributions over the summer totaling $9,000, which has been applied to the loan. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. House Corporation members are grateful for the assistance of Theta Iota sisters from all over the world who help ensure the safety and well- being of our youngest members living in the Chapter House. If you wish to contribute to this project, please use the enclosed donation card. As always, you are welcome to stop by the Tri Delta Chapter House in Manhattan any time. House Director Karen Robbins or any of the collegiate members will welcome you and be happy to show you around to recollect memories from your college days. In the meantime, we send our most sincere wishes for a wonderful autumn and holiday season. Pearls in Our Crescent Our Alumnae Remember (Continued on page 2) I It was a Friday evening, fall of 1949 at 1834 Laramie. Two freshmen women spent the time by themselves, dateless on this night, while their other friends were going outÍž one of their friends was going out with a new boyfriend. Thus, the stage was set for two fun-loving Deltas to play a little trick. The instigator, who prefers to remain anonymous, devised the scheme to dump talcum powder on their friend and her date as the couple left the Chapter House. Assembling their materials, the women waited on the walkway above the entry, backing away from the front so as not to be seen. They waited until their friend was paged, and when footsteps were heard, they dumped the powder. Looking up at them with a powdery and furrowed brow was their housemother, Mrs. Schafer!
