Come and Get 'Em! I just don't get it! If jobs are every politicians "highest priority" then why were only 80,000 jobs added nationally during the last month? This dismal number has our national unemployment percentage at more than 8.2 percent. In Cumberland County it's more than 9 percent. Not acceptable. Many feel these numbers are bogus and grossly understated. Some estimate the actual unemployment- rate percentage could possibly be more than 12 percent since thousands of frustrated job seekers have just given up and dropped out of the job market all together. Again, I just don't get it! With unemployment this high you would think there would be an overabundance of qualified applicants to fill what jobs are available. Right? Not so. owner about the availability of qualifi ed workers. They will respond: Where are they? Sure, the unemployment offi ce is packed during the week and the lines at local job fairs are fi ve city-blocks long, so why are there so many help-wanted signs posted all over town for available positions and no applicants? Could it be because there is no incentive for people to work? Could it be that our "nanny" state government with its entitlement mentally is escalating America's unemployment and crippling the nation's recovery? Sure it could. After all, why work if the government pays you not to? This trend is disturbing but a trend nonetheless. Another disturbing national trend is the lack of good, dependable, quality customer service in the marketplace. Ask any local business Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Thursday July 12 Friday July 13 Saturday July 14 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast The national unemployment percentage is more than 8.2 percent and in Cumberland County it's more than 9 percent. Quality customer service is becoming a lost art and this is becoming evident right here in Fayetteville and Cumberland County, although some would argue it has been evident here a long time. Puzzling. One would think that with the economy stalling and business slow that the quality of customer service would improve and attention to detail would be at its peak. Not so. However, businesses that traditionally and consistently provide high- levels of customer service are faring much better in these tough economic times. These are the businesses we strive to recognize and support because they defi ne our community and shape our community's image and personality. To this end, we encourage you to participate in this year's Best of Fayetteville Free Wheelin' Feelin' ....................... 22 Horoscopes/Advice Goddess ......... 23 Classifieds ........................................ 24 Games .............................................. 26 readership survey. Help us recognize locally the best-of-the- best. Then mark your calendars for Sept. 11, when we honor the businesses and individuals chosen by our readers at a free awards party at Wet Willies in downtown historic Fayetteville. It will be fun and you will be taking an active part in supporting the people, businesses and organizations that shape and defi ne our community. Do this today and you will see short-term and long-term positive results, which may include a decrease in our unemployment rates. Thanks for reading Up & Coming Weekly.
