Ontheair ersattheirown9yardline with 7:05 left in the half, still down 14-7. That's when Brose and McKenzie got back in sync. After the Miners drive came up short, McKenzie scored on a 50-yard catch and run from Brose with 3:18 left in the half and did it again from 17 yards out with just 10 seconds left until halftime. The Spartans went into the half up 28-7, their big- gest lead of the season. Mistakes on both sides made the third quarter back and forth. The Spartans were driv- ing after taking the second half kickoff when Brose was picked off and the Min- ers took over at their own 30. Connor Fennel would pick off Fraley to give the Spartans the ball, but a dropped lateral on the next drive was recovered by the Minersatmidfield.TheMin- ers would come up short on fourth and 5 and the Spar- tans had the ball about half way into the third. On the next play Tanner Tweedt took it to the house from the 50 and Cameron Ortega went in for the con- version to put the Spartans up 36-7. With the next posses- sion, the Spartans would get to the red zone but stall. An Ian Hagan field goal attempt from 35 yards into the wind fell just short with 1:16 to play in the third. Brose would be picked once more at the Miners' 7 midway through the fourth and Yreka would drive the length of the field, but a fumble was recovered in the end zone by the Spar- tans, who took over on their own 20 with 2:18 to play. A fumble put the ball back in the Miners' hands at the Spartans' 21. The league's leading rusher David Ruiz took it in for a touchdown with less than a minute to play, but a Red Bluff win was assured. For the final minute the Spartans would take the victory formation for the first time this season and close out the homecoming win. McKenzie was named player of the game, with 194 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. Brose was 10 of 19 for 272 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions; Tweedt rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and Ortega had 3 catches for 78 yards. Fennel had an intercep- tion and Hagen was 4 for 4 on extra points and had a missed field goal attempt. The win puts the Spar- tans in third place in league play at 1-1 as they look forward to facing the West Valley Eagles Oct. 7. The Eagles are 3-3 overall, but 0-2 in league play after losses to Yreka 24-21 Sept. 23 and Lassen 21-3 Friday. Spartans FROM PAGE 1 Heeney's situation is a little more uncertain. A fifth-round pick in 2015, Heeney was the Raiders' starting middle linebacker for the first two games this year be- fore being benched in fa- vor of rookie Cory James. James led Oakland with 15 tackles in the win over Baltimore while Heeney played mostly on special teams. Del Rio didn't say when or how Heeney got hurt but a team spokesman con- firmed that Heeney had suffered an ankle injury. Outside linebacker Mal- colm Smith also had to come out of the Ravens game with a groin injury. "At this point I don't have an update on that," Del Rio said. "We're hope- ful. I'll know more when I see him moving around tomorrow." The Raiders (3-1) are off to their best start since winning the AFC cham- pionship in 2002. Oakland was without its top three right tackles against Baltimore, forc- ing Vadal Alexander to make his first career start. The rookie was called for four penalties, including three for holding, but Del Rio defended the seventh- round draft pick's perfor- mance. "Those holding calls , there were a couple that were called on him that it was really tough to see any kind of holding going on there," Del Rio said. "I thought he did a heck of job. I know that Khalil (Mack) would love to see all those type of things called every time he's held. It was tough. I think the young man played re- ally well." Raiders FROM PAGE 1 man for Sunday's final 29 defensive snaps. Michael Wilhoite, Gerald Hodges and Shayne Skov are the remaining options at in- side linebacker now that Bowman is joining Ray- Ray Armstrong (pectoral) on injured reserve. "Obviously we'll have to rally together," Bel- lore said. "Things may be different defensively. We have to overcome him not being in there. It's time for guys like myself and the linebacker room as a whole to step up." When Bowman missed the 2014 season recover- ing from knee reconstruc- tion, Wilhoite started all 16 games as his replace- ment next to Patrick Wil- lis, who eventually suc- cumbed to a career-end- ing toe injury after six games and was replaced by Chris Borland. Bellore has aspired for a greater opportunity on defense, and this may be it. "Obviously I know spe- cial teams has been my meal ticket in the NFL, but it's never been out of my mind to be ready for any game," Bellore said. "I've been the 'next guy up' for a long time, and now my time has come." Bowman was the 49ers' leading tackler this season (38) before he crumpled to the grass in non-contact fashion with 5:52 left in Sunday's third quarter. Bowman looked more fluid this season than last year, when he led the NFL in tackles and reclaimed All-Pro status after miss- ing 2014 in knee rehabil- itation. "Looked like he had his legs and feet back under him, back to his usual play," safety Antoine Bethea said. When it comes to a new and improved look, that aptly describes Lynch. He said he weighed over 300 pounds during the ex- hibition season but has dropped down to 270 thanks to an improved diet. "We'll only know Thurs- day if I'm in game-ready shape," Lynch said. "But I feel good. I've got the weight down, about 30 pounds, and I feel ready to go." In July, the NFL handed down his suspension for violating its substance- abuse policy. How did his weight balloon prior to camp? "My wife got preg- nant, so I was eating a lot," said Lynch, who be- came a first-time father last Wednesday with the birth of his son, Messiah. "I wasn't careful with my diet. I was eating what- ever. Out of nowhere, my weight went up and I felt it on the field." In each of his two pre- vious seasons, Lynch tied with Ahmad Brooks for the team lead in sacks (6 in 2014, 6 in 2015). Lynch's 21 quarterback hits last season were tied for 13th most in the league last season, when he also produced 13 tackles for a loss. "He'll be a welcome ad- dition," said coach Chip Kelly, whose defense has seven sacks, including a team-high two from Brooks. — The 49ers passing offense ranks last at 178.8 yards per game, but Kelly defended quarterback Blaine Gabbert's passing motives a day after their losing streak reached three games. "He did a nice job in his decisions," said Kelly, noting he and most of his assistants spent Sunday night at the team facility to expedite preparations for Thurs- day's game. Gabbert has completed 58 percent of his passes (69 of 119) for 728 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. "You look at that ball he threw to Garrett Celek, that's as good of a throw as you'll see in this league," Kelly said of a 29- yard, third-quarter com- pletion. Kelly had more exam- ples to share in Gabbert's defense — finding "hot" receivers to beat the blitz — while dropping no hints that a quarterback switch could be afoot with Colin Kaepernick in reserve. Notes • Defensive tackle De- Forest Buckner's left foot remained in an orthope- dic boot and Kelly had no medical update on it. Buckner did not partici- pate in the walk-through practice, nor did wide re- ceiver Jeremy Kerley (left ankle) and cornerback Jimmie Ward (left quad- riceps). • Limited in practice were left guard Zane Bea- dles (left ankle), corner- back Chris Davis (quadri- cep) and tight end Vance McDonald (hip). • Running back Du- Juan Harris was signed to the practice squad, af- ter being released Satur- day from the 53-man ros- ter for the third time in a month. • Running back Mike Davis had a simple rea- son for not raising his fist during Sunday's national anthem: "I was so focused on the game I honestly for- got," he said Monday 49ers FROM PAGE 1 JOSIE LEPE — BAY AREA NEWS GROUP 49ers' NaVorro Bowman (53) is help off the field against the Dallas Cowboys in the second half of an NFL game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara,.
