ByChipThompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter RED BLUFF The Red Bluff Spar- tans put themselves in the win column Friday night and did so convincingly, with a 36-14 romp of the visiting Yreka Miners for homecoming. Coach Corey Hein credited his team with intensity on defense, swarming to the ball, improved offensive line play and better com- munication. "We just took a really big step in the right direction," Hein told his players after the win. "We're very, very proud of you. Now you have to learn how to win." On the heels of victory slipping through their fingers in the clos- ing seconds 42-41 against the Las- sen Grizzlies Sept. 23 in Susan- ville, the Spartans jumped ahead quickly with quarterback Mar- shal Brose hitting Conner McK- enzie from 16 and 53 yards out for touchdowns to put Red Bluff up 14-0 in the first quarter. It would set the stage for more to come from the duo. The Miners struck back just inside the second quarter when quarterback Dawson Fraley con- nected with Jeff Woodruff for 55 yards and a touchdown, but the Spartans would tighten their grip and hold the Miners without an- other score until the final minute of play. The ensuing Spartans' drive stalled after Brose was sacked and they were forced to punt, putting the Miners in business at the Red Bluff 45. A fumble on the next play was recovered by Isaak Jackson. Aaron Lynch's is just beginning. Wel- come to the twisted dichotomy inside the 49ers exasperated de- fense. Bowman officially got ruled out from returning Monday when tests revealed a ruptured left Achilles, which he sustained during Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. As devastating an injury as it is, his closest teammates do not expect it to end the All-Pro linebacker's career, which only two seasons ago was put on hold because of left-knee reconstruc- tion. "It's tough but Bo is very resil- ient and he's been there before," wide receiver Torrey Smith said. "I'm sure he'll bounce back. We all know how hard he worked to bounce back from his last in- jury, and it's a minor setback to come back and prove folks wrong again." Among those expecting Bow- man, 28, to rebound next sea- son is Lynch, the 49ers top pass rusher who's completed a four- game suspension and expects to make his season debut Thursday night when the 49ers (1-3) host the Arizona Cardinals (1-3). "That's a horrible loss. He was the leader, one of the leaders, of our defense," Lynch said. "Ev- erybody knows who NaVorro Bowman is, so he's always one of the guys they game plan to. … We're going to miss him, but now we're going to have to play for him." Landingham was 8 of 18 for 140 yards and a touchdown, with 6 interceptions, nearly matching Russell's season total of 146 pass- ing yards through 4 games. By Michael Wagaman The Associated Press ALAMEDA The Raiders are ex- pected be without tight end Lee Smith and former starting mid- dle linebacker Ben Heeney for the rest of the season after both play- ers were injured during Sunday's win in Baltimore. Neither player has been placed on injured reserve yet and both were continuing to be evaluated by the team's medical staff but Oakland coach Jack Del Rio was not optimistic about either Smith or Heeney returning this season. "Both of those guys are likely to go (on IR)," Del Rio said Mon- day. "As they finish the work that is done on those guy with our doc- tors and all the experts looking at it, if we determine that the time is such that we won't be able to get them back they could in fact go down. It's not officially done but it's headed in that direction." Smith was injured after catch- ing a short pass from quarterback Derek Carr midway through the second quarter. Smith had his back turned to the defense when Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith tackled him low from behind, causing the tight end's body to bend back awkwardly with his right foot stuck in the turf. Lee Smith had to be helped off the field and did not return. He was initially diagnosed with an ankle injury that was later changed to a lower leg injury. Del Rio didn't go into details about Smith's injury but said he is almost certain to require surgery. "There's some damage there," Del Rio said. "Exactly how long it will take for him to recover and be back to full speed, I'm not certain of that. I would say it's tracking in the direction of him being un- available to us. If that is the case then he'll end up going on IR." The Raiders already have de- fensive end Mario Edwards Jr. on the injured reserve list with plans to bring him back, meaning any other players placed on IR will be done for the season. Losing Smith would be a sig- nificant blow to the NFL's No. 2 offense. Smith has six recep- tions but is Oakland's best block- ing tight end who also doubles on special teams. While the Raiders still have Clive Walford and Mychal Ri- vera, Del Rio didn't rule out add- ing another tight end to the ros- ter if Smith is out. "It will take several people in all likelihood to fill his shoes be- cause of all that he did," Del Rio said. "Mainly the blocking, the dirty work, kind of an unsung kind of hero kind of role where he's just very tough, very deter- mined." NFL Raiders may place Smith, Heeney on IR RAIDERS PAGE 2 49ERS PAGE 2 SPORTS » redbluffdailynews.com Tuesday, October 4, 2016 MORE AT FACEBOOK.COM/RBDAILYNEWS AND TWITTER.COM/REDBLUFFNEWS B1
