WORTHY OF HELP? The Rev. Duke Tufty, pastor of Unity Temple on the Plaza, Kansas City, Mo.: Over the years I have engaged in prayer with people for many different reasons. Sometimes what they prayed for happened. Sometimes it didn't. Is there a God somewhere in the heavens judging what prayers to answer and what prayers not to? If so, what criteria does that God use? Does he answer prayer based on a person's worthiness; how often one goes to church; how desperate or incapable one is? I believe the answer to all of the above is no. What- ever your conception is of God, an old man on a throne or the spiritual energy of the universe that is the essence of your being, God doesn't intervene in our lives. Every living thing has been given everything it needs to live a comfortable and fulfilling life. As human beings we have intelligence, power, imagination, faith, persever- ance and many other spiritual attributes. At times life can be very difficult, but we have been given what is necessary to rise above, move beyond or successfully manage situations and circumstances that arise. We might not like the end result at times, but that's life. When faced with challenges I suggest you get off your knees, back on your feet and step forward, knowing one step at a time, one day at a time will lead you out of the darkness and into the light. When a crisis arises in our lives, we can sometimes create the condi- tions by which successes, relief or recoveries are mea- sured. That is, we often wield the measuring stick in determining whether God addressed our need. As God reveals himself in human history, through prophets and kings and eventually in the person of Jesus Christ, he demonstrates a response to our needs that refuses to be dictated by our own timelines or barometers. Instead, God surpasses hopes and expecta- tions. He feeds the hungry with leftovers in tow. He not only forgives sins, but commands the lame to rise and walk. He miraculously produces more wine, saving the best for last. asked him to intervene, it is not a sign of his absence or his indifference. Rather, such an occasion is an invita- tion to remain open to how God is addressing and responds to the cry of our hearts. In his son, Jesus, God shows how much he cares about humanity, answering our fallen condition in the most unexpected manner: "...he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave." (Philippians 2:7) God knows our needs. May we always trust in God's salvific care, even when not in the man- ner we expect. Although I never met Chuck Colson in the sense of having the privilege to shake his hand and engage in personal conversation with him, I felt as though I knew him well because of the impact he had on my life. I was present in the room at the Lansdowne, Vir- ginia, resort as he began to address attendees the night he was stricken. I looked forward to meeting him personally after his address because I first heard him speak – on tape – more than a decade ago. What I remember of that earlier and vicarious encounter was his statement that he had imagined he knew what real power was when he served as Richard Nixon's hatchet man during pre-Watergate days. He saw that power turned against him when he was tried and con- victed for his role in the Watergate scandal. But he discovered real power only when – broken by his fall from secular power – he was met and healed by the redeeming power of the Risen Jesus Christ. In prison, he said, he learned the real import of Jesus' statement that He made his strength perfect in our weakness. Colson spent the rest of his earthly life remembering and shar- ing that perfection of strength in human bankruptcy. He vowed when he left prison never to forget those who still waited on that per- fection. He always remembered that vow; the rate of return of men to prison after experiencing his ministry is one fifth that of those who have not. But he also discov- ered and served all men inasmuch as we are all broken and waiting to know our redemption – so that we can accept healing at the hands of Him Who was broken for us. The Kingdom of God – on earth as it is in heaven – will never be better Colson was an ex Marine – and most of us know there is no such thing as an ex Marine. He was as tough and dogged as they come when faced with earthly challenges and obsta- cles. But he folded his tent – and moved many to fold theirs – when faced with the onrushing love of the Kingdom of God in the person of the King Himself. That King made His first and most necessary public statement in Matthew 4:17 – which I accurate- ly paraphrase as, "Turn around and face me, for my Kingdom pursues you." The Manhattan Declaration – of which Colson is the chief visionary – is only a reiteration of that call which is the intellectual and moral foundation of our coun- try. states that our first God-given endowment is the right to life itself in all stages and formations it might manifest. It further states that traditional marriage – as it has been understood without exception throughout history – is the God- designed framework in which that life can best be lived for all con- cerned. It finally asserts that with- in the God-given freedom to express our faith in Him as we understand Him – Christian or no – is the only authentic vehicle in which to carry our humanity to its logical conclusion.
