Henny Penny came to visit The Labor Day week-end came with a surprise. Yes, another animal story from the mountains. There are those in Tehama County who have heard many an animal tale involv- ing our retreat in the area of Miner- al. We have involuntarily hosted bears, skunks, snakes, ravens, bob cats, signs of a mountain lion and lesser imposing beasts such as chip- munks, squirrels, rabbits, shrews and several species of birds. So now to tell the general public the latest non-expected animal guest, to visit our mountain retreat, a chicken. An easily identifiable Rhoad Island Red, clucking hen. I was putting away food and clothing when I heard a distinct cluck, cluck, cluck emanating from the front deck. I peered out of the window to spy my husband smiling and cluck- ing at the same time. I caught a glimpse of my husband's smiling face as he clucked, clucked, clucked. I admonished him to quit playing around, he answered by asking me to come outside and take a look. I rather reluctantly walked out on our East deck and to my sur- prise I saw a real chicken slowly following my hubby up the path to our deck. The cluck's from the chicken and the man sounded iden- tical. It seems that husband was enticing the chicken to a place where the wire deck fencing could contain the hen. chickens in the mountain neighborhood and that something had let them out of their henhouse a while back and only part of them were recovered. It was thought that a mountain critter may have had chicken for a meal. I spent some time on the phone locating a member of the chicken owner's family and was finally able to make a connection for someone to come to our place and claim our poultry visitor. The fami- ly member arrived and was able to carry the wandering hen to her real home. I had heard that there were again be okay for a human being to roost on it again. Carolyn Barber Our granddaughter and her hus- band were visiting us and were quite surprised when they arrived just in time to see the chicken head for home. It wasn't until later in the day that I discovered where the hen had been roosting for what looked like a several day period. She had taken up residence on the cot on our front porch right in front of our living room window. She must have thought the owners were inside. Well a little tossing of the sheet on the cot into the washer and it should Chicken and the old time "Chicken Dance" that I have on a '78 record. Maybe the children could help me compose a new chicken song; … "Save Henny Penny and Save a Penny…" With all the politicians and con- stituents cackling and clucking yes or no to the Health Care Insurance subject they may need a little tutor- ing on who are the terrorists and who are the extremists that are clucking about outside their pens. Why do I write copy on such a minimal subject as a visit from a chicken? I am not totally sure except dur- ing these economically challenging times one must be careful to count their chickens after they hatch if not before. Missing chick- ens mean missing eggs or even fried chicken to enhance the grocery sup- ply. It also reminds me of two preschool songs I use with the children in my classes; "The Philadelphia Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays. Hot Weather Fails To Harm Business Here While Red Bluff has no monopoly on hot weather, which the remainder of the Sacramento Valley does not liberally share, everybody concedes here that a few days of lower temperature would be a very accept- able change. — July 7, 2922 Thank you to all the friends and family who shared the services for our love one.
