Traveling across it is the theme of several de- buting series, including two movie spinoffs: The CW's "Frequency" (pre- miering Wednesday, Oct. 5) and ABC's "Time After Time" (due at midsea- son). It's also the thrust of NBC's science-fiction ad- venture "Timeless," which marks a teaming of two successful creator-produc- ers — Eric Kripke ("Super- natural") and Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") — as it starts Monday, Oct. 3. "Timeless" unites a history professor (Abigail Spencer), a Delta Force veteran (Matt Lanter) and a scientific engineer (Malcolm Barrett) to use a tycoon's (Paterson Joseph) secret, literal time machine to pur- sue a villain ("ER" veteran Goran Visnjic) who wants to change the course of history. Their first stop: New Jersey circa 1937, in the moments before the German airship Hindenburg explodes there. That's just the first of many planned, very famous destinations for "Timeless." Ryan says, "We think one of the things that makes our show unique and dif- ferent is that we are going back to the assassination of President Lincoln ... (and) to 1962 Las Vegas. We're going to go to the Alamo. We're going to go to Watergate. We're going to go to Germany during World War II. We're going to the space race the day we landed on the moon. Those things, I think, es- sentially are the heart and core of our show." The catch for the heroes of "Timeless" is that in trying to stop the enemy, they can't do anything to change events of the past. The potential ripple effect could alter many lives, as Spencer's character Lucy learns vividly by the end of the opening hour, and the actress recalls a big lure for her was Ryan and Kripke telling her that she would "never be bored" making the show. "As an actor, that is such a delicious treat," Spencer says, noting that for an ep- isode set in 1865, "I am in the most glorious get-up of all time, with the hoop skirt and the pantaloon and the corset. And then I'm going to be in 1960s wear, so it's really been a beautiful pro- cess ... but what I'm most interested in is the mystery that's going to be revealed over time, so we're keep- ing some things close to the vest." Malcolm Barrett (left), Matt Lanter and Abigail Spencer star in "Timeless," premiering Monday on NBC.
