In honor of the end of kitten season, the Tehama County Animal Care Cen- ter will be holding a two day cat adoption event Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3 and 4. During the End of Sum- mer Blowout Adoption Event, the center will re- duce the price for all cats and kittens to $20 each. In addition to reduced prices, all adopters will receive a gift bag with each adop- tion, to get the cats started in their new homes, cour- tesy of Plum Valley 4-H. Felines ready for adop- tion have been started on vaccinations and tested negative for feline leuke- mia. In addition, all spay and neuter and rabies vac- cination fees for cats ad- opted will be paid for by PETS — Providing Essen- tials for Tehama Shelter. All cats will be altered before going home with adopters, typically the day after they are adopted. "Warmer weather al- ways means we are inun- dated with cats and kit- tens," said Animal Care Center manager Christine McClintock. "All summer long our shelter is over- flowing with cats and kittens. With the cooler weather approaching, we are hoping to see fewer incoming kittens, and in- stead focus on finding the kittens we have forever homes. We love to share what a fun experience adopting a cat can be, and we hope to give cats that have been here a little lon- ger a chance to find new homes as well." The Theama County Animal Care Center is at 1830 Walnut St. in Red Bluff. Care Center hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. Monday through Fri- day, and 10 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. Saturday. Adoption hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m. If you would like more information regarding adopting, fostering or be- coming a Care Center vol- unteer, call McClintock at 527-3439 or write to cmc- clintock52@sbcglobal.net. ANIMALCARECENTER Reduced fee for feline adoption Monday, Tuesday Minnie A special thank you to Ms. Mandy Sharp, direc- tor of Tehama County So- cial Services, Ms. Melissa Heffley, pro- gram man- ager for the Eligibility Branch and the Medi- Cal/Cash Teams. The Medi- Cal/Cash teams partner with the VSO office to pro- vide the best possible ser- vice for veterans to live, work, and raise families. They refer veterans to us who are enrolled in Medi- Cal so they can take ad- vantage of the richer fed- eral benefits they have earned in their military service to our country. By using VA benefits, veterans enrolled in Medi-Cal can usually get more benefits. One success story is a Tehama County vteran who was receiving approx- imately $1,000 in Cash Aid Medi-Cal benefits. She was working with the Medi- Cal/Cash teams and was referred to the VSO office. We discussed her possible VA benefits filed a compen- sation claim. A few months later our Veteran re- ceived 100% compensation. She now receives $3,509 monthly for her and her dependents and received $23,000 in retroactive pay — all tax free. Her depen- dents now have full medi- cal coverage with Civilian Health and Medical Pro- gram of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Because of her service-connected disability, her children will be able to attend a junior college, state college or UC tuition free in California. Veterans that qualify for Medi-Cal are placed in a high priority group and are eligible for VA health care with no co-pays for inpa- tient our outpatient care and low co-pays for med- ication or extended care. Those veterans with ser- vice-connected disabil- ity ratings of at least 50% or higher pay nothing for their health care. The VSO and VSR will be out of the office for training the week of Oct. 3. No VSO/VSR services will be available in the Red Bluff office or Corning and Los Molinos satellite of- fices this week. For emer- gencies only this week, please contact the Shasta County VSO office at 225- 5616. Thank you to Shasta County VSO, Tommy Key, and to our veterans for your patience while we re- ceive mandatory VA ac- creditation and California Department of Veteran Af- fairs training. Michele Fox with the Redding Veterans Resource Center will be at the Red Bluff VSO office 1:30-4 p.m. Oct. 13 and 20. The VRC assists qualified homeless veterans with transitional housing. Please contact the VRC directly at 223-3211. Free yearly TRAX bus passes are available for qualified veterans at the VSO offices. We will issue the bus passes at the Red Bluff office and at our satel- lite offices in Corning and Los Molinos. Please see the VSO office schedules below. LIFT Tehama — Live Inspired for Tomorrow — will be held at the Te- hama District Fairground Nov. 18. This is similar to a Stand Down for homeless or low income veterans and others in our county. There will be a veterans section with nine veteran organizations, including two veterans with PTSD service dog groups and our first equine therapy veter- ans with PTSD organiza- tion. Please plan to partici- pate or volunteer. We hope to see you there. There are many state and federal benefits and programs available to vet- erans and their depen- dents.
