Climatechangeskep- tics are producing bun- dles of credible evi- dence man- kind has not caused plan- etary warm- ing and — pretty sure — we are actually in a cool- ing trend. There is a lot of money and power invested in the global warming- caused-by-people narra- tive but Attorney General Loretta Lynch has the an- swer. She threatens to prosecute people denying the narrative. It speaks poorly for freedom of in- quiry. Lynch told the Senate Judiciary Committee in March her department is considering civil actions against so-called climate change deniers; she has referred the matter to the FBI to determine whether the offense meets legal criteria for prosecution. She follows in the foot- steps of California Attor- ney General Kamala Har- ris investigating Exxon Mobil Corporation for ly- ing about climate change. Harris is that heroine of the left who proposed ed- ucation and jobs pro- grams for illegals in defi- ance of law as District At- torney for San Francisco. She is infamous for refus- ing to defend California law — Proposition 8 — and for raiding the home of pro-life activist David Daleiden when he is not even accused of a crime in California. Lynch, for her part, was answering a question about pursu- ing those who "pretend the science of carbon emissions" is unsettled. This assault on the First Amendment is the latest in the secular- ist war on science; there is no reason to expect them to stop with corpo- rate entities. There will then be nothing to pro- tect parents, scientists, and even legislators from roasting on the politically correct spit. One wag suggested Lynch read up on the Inquisition's per- secution of Galileo for claiming the earth was not the center of the solar system. The difficulty is the question really is unset- tled, but the evidence does not favor warm- ing alarmists. More data pours in showing the earth entering a cooling trend far more dangerous than global warming but less pinnable on people who can be taxed, regu- lated and prosecuted into submission. The US Climate Ref- erence Network was in- stalled in the 1990s to provide ultra accurate temperature measure- ments with instruments more sensitive and more numerous. Exacting us- age protocols cancel the need to extrapolate over information gaps and es- timate trends, virtually eliminating opportunities to fudge data for a parti- san agenda. Readings re- veal a years-long cooling of the oceans that corre- lates with the growth of polar ice caps over two decades. They support a new theory — champi- oned by physicist John Casey (president of Space and Science Corporation) and others — of what reg- ulates global tempera- tures. The driver is not earthborne carbon diox- ide but rather that pesky sun Galileo thought the center of the system. Climatologists have known of sunspots for centuries. They tend to run in eleven year cycles and there is some corre- lation between high num- bers of spots and terres- trial climate trends, but most scientists do not be- lieve they pack the wal- lop-over-distance re- quired to actually alter climate on this planet; Casey and his friends agree. They believe — and have tested — the notion that internal cycles of the sun, not the irradiance of sunspots, drive climate change on earth. What Casey calls the Bicenten- nial Cycle — it lasts a lit- tle more than two cen- turies — began anew in 2009. Using his model he successfully predicted a serious reduction in sun- spots for several cycles to come and this correlates with the cooling trend re- corded all over the planet today. The data also corre- lates to what are known as the Little Ice Ages of the late seventeenth and early nineteenth centu- ries in terms of fewer sunspots recorded dur- ing those times. These cycles can also produce greater numbers of spots and then climate tends to warm. I am not enough scientist — by far — to personally analyze all this, but it is not rocket science to call it both fas- cinating and empty of hu- man causation. What to do. First re- member the First Amend- ment is not intended to provoke so much as to produce truth through the free exchange of ideas — however provocative. Second, let us engage in the full exchange of ideas — without agenda. Third, celebrate the freedom to discover what really is in this process. Or we could just sit back while attor- neys general prosecute those who disagree with them. I know which ap- proach is favored by a God who is "the Way and the Truth and the Life," and, "for freedom has set us free." In one pivotal scene of the classic film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, sci- entist Professor Barn- hart tells alien Klaatu, "It is not faith that makes good science, but curios- ity." Any person of hon- est curiosity will bravely and persistently seek the truth. Only faith, how- ever, which is curiosity submitted to Creator, will actually find the truth he seeks. These services welcome members of any denomi- nation, inviting all to form a community of prayer for the world. Ecumenical Taizé Prayer is co-sponsored by the con- gregations of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Te- hama County United Meth- odist Ministry and the Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff. ECUMENICAL Taize prayer service to be held Sunday The women of the Pres- byterian Church of Red Bluff will be holding a fall rummage sale 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5 and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 6. The sale will be at the church, 838 Jefferson St. in Red Bluff. There will be lots of va- riety of items to choose from, including clothing, household items and fur- niture. Proceeds from the sale will be used for mission projects. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Rummage sale scheduled for Wednesday The Associated Press VATICAN CITY Pope Fran- cis has voiced support for Mexican bishops and cit- izens opposing the gov- ernment's push to legalize same-sex marriage. At his weekly Sunday blessing, Francis said he willingly joined their pro- test "in favor of family and life, which in these times require special pasto- ral and cultural attention around the world." Tens of thousands of people marched through Mexico City on Saturday to protest President Enrique Pena Nieto's proposal on marriage. Wearing white, they held banners warn- ing against same-sex mar- riage and demanding par- ents' right to control sex education in schools. Francis has opposed gay marriage and has railed against "gender ideology," particularly as taught in schools. But he rarely in- tervenes publicly in na- tional debates, preferring to let local bishops take the lead. Francis visited the over- whelmingly Roman Catho- lic Mexico in February.
