Bulldogsat Westwood WESTWOOD After open- ing league play with a 42-0 win over Loyalton followed by a bye week, the Los Molinos Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0) travel to West- wood tonight to take on the winless Lumberjacks (0-4, 0-1). Quarterback Alex Rus- sell will look to pad his stats, with 620 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the season. The passing game is less of a threat, with just 146 yards and seven interceptions. Freshman Hunter Land- ingham is the No. 2 rusher with 184 yards and a touch- down and Kyle Wood leads the team in receiving with 9 grabs for 76 yards. Westwood does not post individual stats for players, but the team's latest loss was at home to the Mercy Warriors, 34-32. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Westwood High School, Fourth and Green- wood streets in West- wood. Warriors at Greenville, Oct. 7 The Mercy Warriors (2-2, 1-1 league) are on a bye this week but will hit the road to face the Greenville Indi- ans (2-2, 1-0) on Oct. 7 Football FROM PAGE 1 he's at his best when he's playing angry, it can't hurt Hyde's motivation that El- liott is being hailed as one of the most promising rookies in the NFL and is garnering even more hype following a 30-carry, 140- yard effort against the Chi- cago Bears this past Sun- day. The performance made him the NFC's lead- ing ballcarrier after three weeks with 274 yards on 71 carries. Hyde is fourth in NFC rushing with 225 yards on 58 carries, and he's com- ing off a 21-carry, 103-yard, two-touchdown game him- self, although much of it was achieved in garbage time of the 49ers' 37-18 drubbing by the Seahawks. Whether Hyde tries to minimize the significance of playing against Elliott or not, it is a subplot almost as compelling as the game itself, if only because the backs appear so remark- ably similar. They were Ohio State teammates in 2013 when Hyde was a stud senior who ran for 1,521 yards and 15 touch- downs. Elliott, just a fresh- man, only got on the field for 30 carries, but ran for 262 yards and two touch- downs. After Hyde was drafted by the 49ers, Elliott took over as the Buckeyes' fea- ture back and ran for 3,699 yards over the next two seasons, became the school's second all-time leading rusher behind Ar- chie Griffin and won a na- tional championship in 2014. Hyde is eighth on the all-time Ohio State rushing list. Even though he praised the Dallas back to the hilt, 49ers coach Chip Kelly wouldn't be drawn into a comparison of Elliott and Hyde. Comparisons just aren't his thing. "I know they're compa- rable because they both played for Ohio State," Kelly said, smirking. For further compari- son's sake, they are both 6 feet and right around 225 pounds. They can both run hard between the tackles or go wide. Both are rela- tively adept as pass-catch- ers although not utilized all that much in that fash- ion. From what he has seen on film, Bowman sees El- liott as a player pretty much a clone of Hyde. "I think they're pretty similar, actually," Bowman said. "Carlos is just a lit- tle bigger, so after contact there may be a few more yards. But other than that, you can tell they were prob- ably coached by the same running back coach." Talking about Hyde to the Dallas media on Wednesday, Elliott paid his elder the proper respect and said he implemented many of Hyde's tactics as a runner. "I saw how physical he was and how good he was after contact," Elliott said. "I think that was some- thing that, when I saw in my sophomore year and was trying to work on it — just kind of getting those yards after contact, working on my pad level. I watched a lot of film of him from the year before." Elliott said he believes Hyde is destined for long- term success with the 49ers "because it's more the mentality he brings to the game. He's a dog, a fighter, a competitor. He just runs with a bold atti- tude." Hyde said he didn't feel like influenced Elliott that much, that he was more just a product of the Buck- eyes' system, but admitted he is still close to him. "Zeke was like a little brother when I was back at Ohio State and I still talk to him here and there," he said. Not this week, though. "Nah, I haven't talked to anybody this week except my mom," he said. • Having coached the Philadelphia Eagles for three seasons and played Dallas twice a year, Kelly admitted he does a little inside knowledge on Cow- boys tendencies. He doesn't know how helpful that'll be, though. There's just some more familiarity with what Dal- las does," Kelly said "But in terms of implement- ing game plans, it's always based upon what we have available to either A, defend them or B, attack them." Kelly was asked if the Cowboys operate differ- ently on offense with Dak Prescott instead of Tony Romo at quarterback. "They are slightly dif- ferent," he said. They run the quarterback a little bit more. Obviously they weren't doing that with Tony, but I think their base pass concepts are very similar to what Dallas has done in the past and what (offensive coordinator Scott) Linehan has done as the offensive coordinator." • Linebacker Aaron Lynch returns next week after a league-imposed four-week suspension for a failed drug test, but Kelly was unsure about his read- iness to jump right in. "Ihaven'twatchedAaron do anything because he's not with us during prac- tice," Kelly said. "I know talking to our strength and conditioning coach, he's working extremely hard off the field … we're anx- ious to get him back here, but we'll see where he is af- ter Game 4." • Tight end Vance Mc- Donald, who is still listed as questionable with a hip injury suffered against Se- attle, practiced for the first time this week but was still moving gingerly. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 bers. It's about us making the plays we need to make to win games." Defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. said there's more awareness from op- posing defenses on stop- ping Mack, but agreed with Del Rio that he's still mak- ing an impact despite the lack of numbers. "He's getting the quar- terback off the spot," Nor- ton said. "Sacks is always a big thing for everybody to count, but at the same time, he's affecting the quarterback. "We had a few turnovers last week. It's not by acci- dent. The entire group is working together. Khalil's success is working out for the rest of the group. It's making everybody else bet- ter. It's freeing everybody else up for 1-on-1s and hav- ing a chance for us to put pressure on the quarter- back." If that's the case, therein lies the problem. There hasn't been much help from the rest of the Raid- ers pass rushers. Oakland has only three sacks in the first three games. Bruce Irvin got one on the third defensive play of the season and Stacy Mc- Gee had one on the third play of Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons. Denico Autry had the only sack Sunday against the Ten- nessee Titans. With Mario Edwards Jr. out for at least five more games with his hip injury, the Raiders need someone else besides Mack to begin taking advantage of those matchups. It's also on the second- ary to step up its game. That group played better in Sunday's win over the Titans — the final drive of the game aside — but it still didn't lead to an increased rush. "We just signed Bruce Ir- vin, we have Khalil Mack up front, you want those guys to just rush," corner- back Sean Smith said. "Us in the secondary, if we can go out and cover for a few seconds, that's all the time those guys need. If we can just lock up for a little bit and make plays on the ball, when you have those kind of plays, the defense, the team, the whole stadium, fans, everybody feeds off of them. It's a win-win sit- uation." Giving the pass rush time to arrive Sunday against the Baltimore Ra- vens will be a challenge be- cause the Raiders are fac- ing another quarterback in Joe Flacco who, like New Orleans' Drew Brees and Atlanta's Matt Ryan, spe- cializes in getting the ball out quickly. "He doesn't need much time," Smith said of Flacco. "He can just stand in the pocket and sling that thing 50 yards across the field. Tight coverage (is what) we're definitely going to need again this week." • Mack could have a chance to take advantage of a weakened Baltimore offensive line. Starting left tackle Ronnie Stanley, the Ravens' top draft pick at No. 6 overall, has missed the past two days of prac- tice with a foot injury.
